  Position Summary

  Oversee the daily operation of the Toxicology/Nutrition Inorganic Mineral Zone Section of the CVM Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and supervise the technologists and students working there. Coordinate the purchase, maintenance, and repair of equipment. Review and document quality control data and monitor test completion. Consult with clients to resolve problems and provide information. Manage administrative duties for the laboratory, and coordinate process improvement and problem solving for the laboratory. Perform assays, procedures, data reduction, and data entry for diagnostic purposes. Process and test diagnostic samples for proficiency/specialty projects.

  Percentage Breakdown of Duties:

  10% - Supervise laboratory personnel. Monitor attendance, adjust schedules to meet workload demands and coordinate required staff training and cross-training. Manage training records. Enter payroll data. Evaluate employee performance and submit performance reviews for employees to ensure the quality and quantity of work produced. Interview, hire and discipline employees.

  40% - Manage administrative duties for the laboratory including billing adjustments, customer complaints, SOP writing and review, service agreement preparation, supply ordering, purchase/repair of equipment, web catalog revisions, and cost analysis for all tests offered by the section. Attend Operations meetings and facilitate monthly section meetings. Resolve lab problems and coordinate lab policy. Communicate with other supervisors and the Quality Manager to coordinate problem solving between teams.

  30% - Perform laboratory assays and procedures, including confirmatory and quality control testing to produce results for the health maintenance, diagnosis and treatment of animals. Identify and resolve technical problems related to this testing. Participate in scheduled proficiency testing.

  5% - Monitor completeness and accuracy of testing. Enter data for completed testing. Communicate lab findings to clients and other labs and provide information that assists clients with sample submission and test interpretation. Resolve testing and reporting issues.

  5% - Manage quality control. Identify and resolve quality control variances, maintain QC records, and perform monthly QC review. Monitor equipment calibrations, prepare the lab for audits, and respond to audit-generated corrective actions.

  10% - Participate in special projects. Assist in the implementation of specialized diagnostic tests, method comparisons, and method validation. Assist in processing, testing and shipping surveillance samples.

  Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

  Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Biological Sciences or a related science field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in the technical aspects of the work to be performed, experience implementing procedures and programs; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require specialty certifications, approvals, or training.

  Desired Qualifications

  Work experience in high-volume diagnostic testing; experience in laboratory supervision; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require specialty certifications, approvals, or training.

  Outstanding organizational skills; excellent leadership and communication skills; experience using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and/or Microsoft Office programs; experience in a high-volume diagnostic laboratory using mass spectral methodologies.
