  Job ID356360 LocationTwin Cities Job FamilyLR-Service/Maintenance/Labor Full/Part TimeFull-Time Regular/TemporaryRegular Job Code6060 Employee ClassTeamsters Local 320 About the Job Job Description Laboratory Attendant Job Family: LR-Service/Maintenance/Labor Job Code: 6060 Employee Class: Teamsters Local 320 * This position is governed by the Minnesota Teamsters Union Local 320.* Overview: This bargaining unit position is responsible for cleaning, washing, sterilizing, and caring for the various kinds of caging apparatus and equipment used for housing laboratory animals. Ongoing tasks may include the following: * Operate cage and bottle washers, autoclaves, and bedding dispensing/disposal equipment. Move/lift heavy equipment/animals. * Order and store feed and supplies. * Clean and sanitize equipment, rooms, and facilities. * Any other duties as assigned by supervisor. This position is designed as a training position, and by the 6 (six) month employment mark, employees may be reclassified into the Laboratory Animal Attendant (6062) position. Employees will receive additional training in the following areas: * Feed, care, and observe physical condition of mice, rats, and other laboratory animals for signs of disease or illness. Must follow strict protocols and instructions written and orally presented in English. * Maintain appropriate room records, animal receipts, and other records. * Participate and perform euthanasia of small animals. Some work assignments will involve exposure to animal allergens, high levels of noise, and/or disinfectants and sanitizing agents. To protect employees, the University of Minnesota may ask that you wear personal protection equipment, some of which may require medical monitoring and fitness testing. All required protective equipment, testing and medical evaluations will be provided by the University. All offers of employment for this position will be conditioned on the completion of a medical questionnaire, evidence of current tetanus immunization prior to start date, and/or a fitness for duty examination to ensure the applicant's ability to work in an environment that may present occupational health and safety hazards associated with work. Qualifications Qualifications Required Qualifications: * Able to meet physical requirements of the job. Preferred Qualifications: * Must be able to lift/push 50 pounds. * Must be able to understand and follow written and oral instruction in English. About the Department Research Animal Resources (RAR) primarily focuses on the service and administration of the animal care and use program at the University of Minnesota. The position of Laboratory Attendant is union represented, and is part of a staff of over 100 employees including Professional and Administrative staff, Civil Service staff, Union Represented members, and student employees. RAR has a daily census of 24,000 rodent cages in 20 buildings split into 7 geographic teams around the Minneapolis and St. Paul Campuses.
