About Intern - Concentrating Solar Technologies - R&D Graduate Year-Round

  What Your Job Will Be Like:

  We are seeking an engineering student in the Concentrating Solar Technologies Department to assist our R&D staff with a next generation, solid-particle heat transfer media CSP project. Expertise in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and solid mechanics is desirable. The project will allow you to learn on the job and gain experience in high-temperature particle measurements and control, data analysis, and large-scale testing. You will learn about contemporary engineering challenges in solid particle media (termed "Gen3") CSP and can employ creative design skills in developing testing equipment and experiments. Your work will contribute to advancing Gen3 CSP components to larger scales and higher temperatures than ever achieved.

  The work performed by the student intern may assist in any or all the following topical areas: computational (CAD, data analysis), exp erimental (measurements, controls, and operating test equipment), and administrative (reporting, project management) tasks. Students are invited to propose a school/work balance plan which specifies preferences for on-site/remote work schedules and potential ties of NSTTF tasks to academic requirements such as independent study, thesis, or dissertation. Understanding and adherence to applicable Sandia National laboratories ES&H requirements and guidelines will be important for this position.

  On any given day, you may be called on to:

  Work with experienced engineer s and technologists on their R&D. These activities and projects may be theoretical, computational and/or experimental. These activities will often require working in teams that include partners from other institutions.Assist in the development of proposals to seek funding from sponsors and customers for new or ongoing R&D projects in CSP.Ass ist in analysis and re porting of technical results in project reports, journal article publications and presentations.

  Qualifications We Require:

  You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  Earned bachelor's degreeCurrently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate programMinimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summerU.S. citizenship

  Qualifications We Desire:

  Some familiarity with Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) and alternative energyCoursework in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and solid mechanicsDemonstrated experience using MS Office and excellent written and oral communication skillsAny experience using LabView or any other DAQ/control softwareExperience in test operation and designAny experience programming in LabVIEW or MATLAB

  Security Clearance:

  Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.   If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
