   Position Description:

  The Human Rights Advisor is responsible for the implementation of the College's Human Rights Discrimination and Harassment Policy, inter-connected policies such as the Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence and other conduct and equity related policies to ensure adherence to the Ontario Human Rights Code. The incumbent is responsible for performing intake, case management, and response to Human Rights complaints, as well as developing and delivering education and outreach across the college community related to the George Brown College Human Rights Discrimination & Harassment Policy and inter-connected policies.

  The prevention and education activities include an intersectional and trauma informed approach taking into consideration the College's response to the Truth and Reconciliation commission and its commitment to embedding an anti-racism and equity-minded principles and practices in learning outcomes.

  Key responsibilities:

  Conducts intake sessions with individuals wishing to file a complaint gathering pertinent information to determine if the claim is viable; review complaints including individual disclosures of discrimination and/or harassment of one or more of the prohibited grounds under the Ontario Human Rights Code

  Responsible for pursuing a complaint in the event a situation poses a threat to the college employees, students, and visitors.

  The incumbent may also be requested to conduct investigations into complaints.

  Provides all relevant documentation and contact information to the assigned investigator (internal or external) as well as the OAREHRS Operations Coordinator.

  Maintains a caseload of alleged complaints, collecting information, reviewing files, and gathering necessary information to identify issues relevant to human rights complaints.

  Understand diverse needs and responds in racially/culturally sensitive manner and ensure complainants/respondents have access to additional sources of external and/or internal resources for support.

  Uses case management system for data input and information retrieval.

  Responsible for understanding the diverse needs and multicultural nuances that may require additional sources of external and/or internal resources for supporting the complainant and/or respondent.

  Assesses potential for early or alternative resolution of cases.

  Facilitates resolution through mediated conversation or other methods of resolution.

  Conducts research, environmental scans and collects best practices in creating and developing educational, presentation, promotional material on diversity issues, campaigns and special initiatives that are aligned with the college's strategic direction and global diversity issues.

  Develops and delivers regular education and training sessions on a variety of topics including but not limited to human rights, positive space, sexual violence, anti-racism, equity, and diversity to student and employee audiences.

  Works collaboratively with Indigenous Education Services and Manager, Anti Racism Integration to support the development of education activities and programming.

  Responsible for understanding and interpreting all policies governing the work, this includes, FOI, to ensure no breach of confidential information during a case; Ontario Human Rights Code; Sexual Violence Policy and Protocol; Workplace Violence and Harassment; AODA and all College Code of Conduct Policies.

  Works with Student Associations, Faculty & Staff groups on collaborative education and training projects with consistent messaging from cross-sector stakeholders and best practices in the field.

  Provides collaborative knowledge and recommendations for College committees around inclusive practices as a representative of OAREHRS and as requested by their manager or Director.

  Other related duties as assigned.

  Educational and Experience Requirements:

  Minimum four-year degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in relevant field (Law, Social Science, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience).

  Minimum five (5) years' experience in case management, from note taking to report writing.

  Solid knowledge of with relevant legislation, trends and best practices related to diversity, equity, human rights, anti-racism, and anti-oppression theory.

  Proficiency in MS Office suite and database skills.

  Familiarity with case management databases and capacity to use a variety of educational and promotional tools, including social media.

  Experience in full-cycle case management. Experience providing advice, consultation, support or direct education to employees and students, of Human Rights, including, Sexual assault/violence matters.

  Skills and Attributes:

  Ability to work in a unionized environment and across the college with all levels of employee groups.

  Excellent attention to detail.

  Advanced mediation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.

  Pays particular attention to the diverse impact of human rights violations on persons who are racialized, trans or gender non-conforming, queer, faith-based and/or have disabilities and/or members of other historically marginalized communities.

  Skilled in trauma informed and restorative approaches.

  Excellent analytical skills to assess the relevance of evidence and exercise sound judgement.

  Ability to understand and interpret policies and protocols.

  Ability to work independently.

  Excellent tact and listening skills.

  Ability to exercise discretion regarding sensitive or confidential and volatile situations; high degree of emotional regulation.

  Solid strategic planning, organizational, project management, and multi-tasking skills.

  Ability to build relationships with internal and external partners.

  Solid research, report writing, facilitation, and outreach skills.

  Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  Demonstrated commitment to uphold the College's priorities on diversity and equity.

  Demonstrated leadership and effective ability to work within a team and interact with others at all levels (student to executive) and deal with situations in ways that support a positive and inclusive college community.

  Ability to engage in consultative decision-making processes and build positive relationships with diverse stakeholders.

   Interview process may consist of a practical skills component.
