Gannett South New Jersey (Courier-Post, Burlington County Times and The Daily Journal) seeks an experienced reporter to cover high school and other community sports in South Jersey.
This position requires a reporter with strong storytelling skills to work the local sports beat to find compelling human-interest stories and identify interesting trends for enterprise stories for various sports.
The candidate should have a deep knowledge of the South Jersey landscape and be well-versed in the digital requirements of covering local sports. The position requires strong writing and reporting skills with the ability to deliver breaking news and to-the-point stories as well as larger, in-depth enterprise pieces.
The reporter must be able to attract audiences through strong headline and SEO writing as well as have the ability to produce multimedia assets through photos and videos. The content created will have to attract page views and deliver digital subscribers. The reporter should have a strong knowledge of social media platforms and be able to grow that presence. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and able to work well independently.
Responsibilities Be the area's leading voice in high school sports. Connect with players, Craft coverage based on audience interest that attracts digital subscribers, page views, and brings them back to read more. Self-starter with the ability to develop relationships through phone calls, text messaging and social media. Requirements: Bachelor's degree. Combination of education and experience relevant to journalism. Strong command of grammar and AP Style. Strong communication, planning and organizational skills. Exposure to and success in a deadline-driven environment. Social-media and SEO knowledge. Comfort with self-guided work as well as collaborative production. Command of journalism skills that lead to developing fair, balanced and accurate content in a publish-ready state. This role requires a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
