Responsibilities
Shall provide technical support to assist pathologists during necropsy procedures as well as perform independent tissue collections, tissue accessioning, and routine and special histological processing on submitted cases, including but not limited to molecular techniques such as immunohistochemistry.
Will perform duties and responsibilities as a team member and independently, based on guidelines and objectives provided by the technical point of contact (TPOC) and pathology laboratory manager.
Will be required to perform necropsy and related procedures in BSL-1 through BSL-4 IAW all institute safety recommendations, guidelines, and procedures.
Prepare the instruments and other materials necessary to conduct necropsies.
Collect specimens such as tissues, culture samples, and blood or body fluid samples during necropsy.
Dissect, or assist with the dissection of laboratory animals and properly collect, label, and preserve/fix tissue specimens as required.
Dispose of animal carcasses IAW institute safety guidelines and procedures.
Prepare preliminary record of gross findings using appropriate pathological terminology. Prepare and transmits gross photographic images.
Accession submitted cases into the pathology database and performs database entry procedures utilizing computer hardware and software. Maintain accurate records of all specimens.
Perform routine and special histological procedures, including but not limited to molecular techniques such as immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, involving specimen trim-in, processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, and archival of completed case materials.
Assist in the maintenance and operation of the ultrastructural and molecular pathology laboratories.
Ensure laboratories meet biosafety and good laboratory practice (GLP) requirements, as applicable.
Ensures laboratories are fully stocked, operational, and meets all inspection requirements.
Evaluate, modify, or develop procedures to meet special requirements of particular research studies.
Will mentor and skill verify new technicians to ensure trainees follow all Institute biocontainment training and laboratory biosafety requirements. Advise and train new laboratory personnel and investigators on methods and materials needed to assure proper tissue handling and collection, and preservation of specimens for a wide variety of histological, immunohistochemical, and special molecular or pathology relevant/related procedures and assays.
Prepare documentation to request changes to current Division SOPs.
Track and adhere to sensitive timelines.
Perform quality control checks and acquire all signatures necessary for SOP change approval.
Review and report changes needed for Periodic Review documents.
Revise existing SOPs and point of contact for Pathology SOP issues and questions.
Perform required job-related training, to include GLP training as necessary IAW Pathology Division policies and procedures.
Act as alternate user and assist the subject matter expert with operating microscope slide scanning instrumentation (i.e.; Olympus VS200 Research Slide Scanner or equivalent) and to prepare and organize digital image files for pathologist review.
May be required to attend 1 scientific conference annually to obtain continuing education and to ensure cutting edge knowledge and techniques are maintained.
Participate in manuscript development and preparation for publication of research as required.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree or above in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Biology, or a related field.
HT (ASCP) certified or have significant relevant experience.
4 years of laboratory experience.
Active or ability to obtain a Secret Clearance.
Ability to secure and maintain a security clearance and enrollment in the Biosurety Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP).
Prior experience in BSL-3 or BSL-4 laboratories is preferred.
Must be HT (ASCP) certified or have significant relevant experience
Variable work hours may apply based on technical job requirements, including occasional night and weekend hours
Enrollment in the Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) for handling select agents is required and must be maintained IAW the provisions in this contract and all applicable regulations.
Must have a favorably adjudicated Single Scoped Background Investigation (SSBI) completed
An FBI Security Risk Assessment (SRA) must also be completed and approved.
Estimated Salary/Wage
USD $61,393.53/Yr. Up to USD $75,000.00/Yr.
