The Head of US Media Relations creates and executes strategies to manage the reputation of AstraZeneca in the media, establishes and fosters relationships with key media contacts, and advises key stakeholders in the company. This role has a particular focus on strategic proactive communication of the company's position on key milestones, major initiatives, issues and policies across our Enterprise US Business.
Typical Accountabilities:
Developing and implementing proactive and reactive media relations strategies that support AstraZeneca's objectives and mission.
Establishing and Fostering relationships with key business and trade media contacts around the world, with a primary focus on US, to help secure positive coverage for the company across broadcast, print and digital.
Developing and managing communications programs, including press releases, media kits, and other materials in partnership with US External Communications.
Leading the coordination of interviews and press conferences with executives and other key personnel.
Monitoring and analyzing media coverage of the company to identify trends and potential issues.
Advising executives and other internal partners proactively on messaging and media relations strategies.
Managing crisis communications in the event of negative press or other reputation threats and coordinating with US External Communications and Global Corporate Affairs on aligned messaging
Collaborating closely across US External Communications and the rest of the Corporate Affairs teams, such as internal communications, policy, governmental affairs and social media, to ensure that messaging is consistent across all channels.
Serving as spokesperson in US for the company on key company topics, news flow, and issues while proactively pitching media and responding to incoming media requests.
Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Essential:
Bachelor's degree in natural sciences, Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or related studies.
15+ years of hands-on experience in managing proactive/reactive media relations programs involving complex regulatory and scientific topics
Public relations background, or journalism experience
Demonstrated experience proactively engaging with US business media as well as pharma trade
Robust verbal and written communication skills.
Desirable:
Advanced degree in natural sciences, communication, journalism, public relations, marketing or related studies
Global experience
Knowledge of pharmaceutical and/or healthcare industry, preferably also within the oncology space

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $168,000 to $231,000. However, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition, our positions offer a short-term incentive bonus opportunity; eligibility to participate in our equity-based long-term incentive program (salaried roles) or to receive a retirement contribution (hourly roles). Benefits offered included a qualified retirement program [401(k) plan]; paid vacation and holidays; paid leaves; and, health benefits including medical, prescription drug, dental, and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans. Additional details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
