  In addition to performing all functions of Level I & II Gunsmith, The Gunsmith III qualification for this position usually requires attendance at a formal one-to-two-year accredited in-house gun-smiting course, or equivalent work experience. This worker has a thorough understanding of and can instruct in external/internal and terminal ballistics, can build custom pistols and rifles, as well as other types of weapon’s systems with no supervision, and has a thorough understanding of machine tools and equipment. In addition, this incumbent can do the following: work from blueprints without supervision, design, fabricate and develop prototype small arms systems from a drawing or form customer input, work to Special Repair Facility Level maintenance, and can design computer prototypes from customer input. The Gunsmith III consults with government officials in all facets concerning the Weapons Department, such as, but not limited to, indoor/outdoor range design, ammunition fundamentals ballistics, weapons mounts, suppressors, optic systems, prototype development and reverse engineering projects, and performs direct supervision and training of subordinate gunsmiths.

  Job Responsibilities:

  Serves as Journeyman repairer of all small arms such as, but not limited to pistols, rifles, shotguns, carbines, grenade launchers, submachine guns, mortars, cannons, howitzers and other accessories such as mounts, bayonets and tripods.

  Performs the full range of work involved in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of small arms and accessories.

  Makes initial acceptance inspection which consists of diagnosis and location of mechanical deficiencies and malfunctions of small arms and accessories.

  Performs complete disassembly, completely checks all parts by visual, gauge or operational means. Determines exact nature of repairs required. Replace broken or damaged parts in accordance with specifications of technical manuals and technical bulletins.

  Performs complete reassembly. Modifies weapons by replacing obsolete parts and/or assemblies in accordance with DA modification work orders.

  Perform bore scope and pullover on M1A2, M109A6, and other cannon related equipment. Annotates information on DA Form 2408-4 weapons card.

  Uses hand and machine tools, precision gauges, test instruments and jigs and alignment devices in making repairs, modifications and adjustments.

  Maintains and conducts all aspects of vault operations, security and documentation of sensitive items, IAW Company and applicable regulations.

  Performs other duties as assigned.

  Minimum Qualifications:

  High School graduate or equivalent with formal military or civilian training in small arms repair specific to 45/91F series.

  Two years administrative experience with some knowledge of military operations and schedules.

  Must have good oral and written communication skills.

  Must also possess a working knowledge of office tools/programs.

  MATERIAL & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:

  Small Arms TMDE, gauges and hand tools.WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

  Work is generally conducted in a shop environment. However, duties may involve the conduct of work in the out-of-doors area with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions.

  Work will require lifting up to 50 lbs.; stooping; climbing; prolonged standing; prolonged sitting.

  Pay Rate: $28.95 per hour, plus applicable Health & Welfare fringe dollars as defined under the DOL's Wage Determination.

  Paid Leave: Vacation, holiday and Sick Leave offered will be as defined under the DOL's Wage Determination.
