This position provides care to animals, maintains kennel cleanliness, and assists the animal control officers with animals. This position will be under a 6-month probationary period. Upon successful completion of the probationary period, the incumbent will begin the field training necessary to become a state certified Animal Control Officer. Position Title: Kennel Attendant/Deputy Animal Control Officer-In-Training
Department: Prince Edward County Animal Control
Reports To: Chief Animal Control Officer
General Definition of Work:
Provides care to animals. Maintains kennel cleanliness. Maintains equipment. Performs routine/minor repairs. Assists Animal Control Officers with animals. Receives animals brought into the shelter and maintains accurate records. Answers questions from the public. Assists the public in locating lost pets and redeeming animals from the shelter. Aids with filling out forms and applications. Data entry of current and previous years statistics. Performs related work as required. Work is performed under the supervision of the Chief Animal Control Officer. This position will be under a 6-month probationary period, in which kennel attendant will be the primary focus. Upon satisfactory completion of the probationary period, the incumbent will begin field training necessary to become a state certified Animal Control Officer.
Essential Functions:
Provides for the health and safety of animals in the shelter.Maintains County Animal Shelter, as required by state regulations.Performs maintenance and cleaning duties.Answers questions from citizens, visitors, and county officials in a timely, courteous, and professional manner.Posts notices of impounded animals, collects fees from owners, and releases animals into owners custody.Maintaining records and files, and preparing reports, as required by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and Prince Edward County.Accompanies Animal Control Officers on patrols and enforcement of state and county regulations.Assists Animal Control Officers with humane euthanasia when required.Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Animal Control Officer.Must be reasonably accessible when on-call (24-hour basis).Maintains assigned vehicle, departmental equipment, supplies and facilitiesResponds to emergency situations, as required.Testifies in court, as required, on a variety of cases involving the enforcement of Animal Control Ordinances.Assists the state veterinarian with animal cruelty cases.Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:
General knowledge of the care, control and handling of dogs and other animals; general knowledge ability to recognize rabies symptoms and other animal diseases and some knowledge of the methods and procedures to be followed; ability to collect facts and prepare reports; ability to deal tactfully with the public; ability to maintain composure in stressful and difficult situations.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of educatio and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in work involving the care of animals and working with the public.
Special Requirements:
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
Maintaining a valid Virginia State Driver's License is required.
Must be fingerprinted and pass a criminal background check.
Must carry a firearm and qualify at least annually with the weapon; a Certificate in Safety and Use of Handguns is required.
Humane Euthanasia Certification is required within 1 year.
Completion of state certified animal control school within 1 year.
Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts:
Must be able to operate a motor vehicle under normal and emergency conditions; requires working in adverse weather - extreme cold and extreme heat; work conditions may be stressful. This can be heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; requires extensive walking, standing, frequent lifting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for operation of motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.
HOURS: 8 Hours Per Day. 8am-4pm. Weekends, holidays, and night-time on-call is required. Starting schedule Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. A rotating schedule will be determined after the 6-month probationary period.
SALARY: Salary depends on experience, but not less than $31,200. County benefits include health insurance and retirement package. A monthly salary is paid on the last workday of the month. Prince Edward County is an equal opportunity employer.
