Functions
The Responsibilities of the Firearm and Toolmark Technician include:
Responsible for the examination, documentation, and test firing of firearms and entry of cartridge cases into the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN).
Appears in state and federal courts to testify to the completed analysis in legal criminal proceedings.
Transfers, organizes, and inventories evidence.
Performs performance verifications on instrumentation.
Prepares chemicals, reagents, and other materials needed for casework.
Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with science courses, from an accredited college or university is preferred for the Firearm and Toolmark Technician position. A minimum a high school diploma is required for the position of Firearm and Toolmark Technician.
Before performing casework, the Firearm and Toolmark Technician will be required to successfully complete an internal training program that will include competency sample testing, written and oral examination, and a mock trial (this training program can be modified based on experience).

Summary
The Forensic Technician is responsible for the daily activities of a forensic laboratory section. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Functions
Performs laboratory activities in one of the following sections: Evidence Receiving, Field Investigation, or Histology and Autopsy Services. Implements section specific policies and procedures. Maintains files, chain of evidence, and inventory control of tissues and bio specimens. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
The formal education equivalent of a high school education, with science coursework and/or appropriate licenses, certificates or experience. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management.
