Overview:
The position includes physical requirements and the ability todistinguish all colors used in
telephone cable; ability to work aloft from ladders, platforms, poles(with climbers); and
bucket trucks and must possess the ability to lift, carry, set up andsecure 28 foot ladder
and the ability to load/transfer standard nitrogen cylinders.
This position will work on large cable transfers, paper cable, piccable, maintenance, road
moves and on all cables sizes, types and environments. This positionwill work regularly on
DS0 and DS1 circuits, Adtran and Calix test and turn-up and more.
This position performs duties such as: cable maintenance, installation,removal,
rearrangement and maintenance of single line and associatedtelecom/apparatus
equipment, including cross connections to switching equipment andsingle-line and
multichannel subscriber carrier.
Responsibilities:
? Splicing fiber cable for large cable transfers
? Cable maintenance
? Adtran and Calix testing and turn-up
? Light labor including lifting manhole covers and barricading openmanholes
? Connection testing
? Working with ISP/OSP terminations
? Working in, from and around hand-holes and manholes
Qualifications:
Splicing Roles are split between three levels based upon skill set
Apprentice/Entry level
? Basic understanding of splicing principles or ability to learn
? Basic experience with electrical work
? Experience working from hand-holes and manholes
? Must pass company drug testing
? Must know the color code system for cable pairs
? Ability to work in confined spaces
? Possesses strong analytical and problem solving skills
? Ability to work with internal and external customers
? Must have strong interpersonal communication skills to effectivelycommunicate
with product vendors and customers
? Ability to work from oral or written instructions and plan workwithout direct
supervision
? Possesses proficient personal computer operations skills
? Comply with all safety regulations and meet safety requirements tomaintain a
successful safety record
? Assume all duties as assigned
Intermediate level
? 2 or more years of fiber splicing experience
? Knowledge of hot cuts and solid OTDR testing
? Ribbon splicing knowledge preferred
? Knowledge of local cable facilities and fiber networks
? Experience in Outside Plant telecom functions
? Experience in how to read and interpret out side and subscriber plantfacility
records and engineering schematic work prints
? Electronics training or experience that demonstrates knowledge ofAC/DC theory
? Working knowledge of analog and digital transmission
? Experience in splicing fiber optics, copper cable (various spliceconnectors)
? Working knowledge of direct termination of fiber-optic connectorsincluding
mechanical, anaerobic, epoxy polish, heat cured as well as pigtailsplicing methods
? Knowledge of bonding and grounding requirements of telecommunicationsplant
? Working knowledge of ISP/OSP fiber optics terminations in splicingproducts in
regards to appropriate application
? Must be able to travel overnight as necessary to meet business and job
requirements
? Assist other technical personnel in the performance of their dutieswhen requested
? Ability to work with paper/pulp splicing, tagging and restoration
