Worker will be required to perform a variety of duties related to theproduction of onions, peppermint, alfalfa seed, corn, alfalfa, beans,tomatoes, peaches, and cattle. The majority of the work activitiesduring the overall contract period, however, will be related to generalfarm work/irrigation/crop production.
General Farm Work will include the following responsibilities: maintain,drive, attach, and operate farm implements/tractors/equipment to tillsoil, plant, cultivate, fertilize, and harvest crops; may mix and/orspray chemicals (according to appropriate restrictive use laws, when/ifapplicable); remove undesirable and excess growth from crops or farmgrounds; remove rocks from field; replace/repair fencing; performgeneral cleanup of farm areas; operate vehicle, motor bike, orall-terrain vehicle in the course of performing duties; drive,load/unload farm trucks; plant onions by walking behind tractors toobserve planter (unclog planter if necessary); weed onions using farmhand tools to remove weeds from onion fields; even out rows for harvest;remove unwanted debris; pick produce; place produce in buckets; handproduct off to or receive from another worker for placement in boxeslocated on trailers; place produce in boxes located on trailers; carefor and pick/harvest tomatoes and peaches; workers possessing the properlicensure may be asked to transport other farm workers.
Irrigation duties will include the following:
Hand lines: connect pipes; check alignment of pipe and adjust for properwater distribution; attach lines to water supply; turn on pump; turnvalves to start flow of water; disassemble lines and carry pipes acrossfields at specified intervals.
Pivots: operate, maintain and repair system.
Flood Irrigation: lift gate in side of flooded irrigation ditch/pipepermitting water to flow into bordered section of field; shovel and packdirt in low spots of embankment or cut trenches in high areas to directwater flow; close gate in ditch/pipe when bordered section is flooded;siphon water from flooded reservoir or ditch to channel water intodesignated areas; shovel or hoe soil to clear ditches/furrows and buildembankments to appropriately channel water.
Drip Irrigation: walk behind tractor to assist in installing/laying dripirrigation; move drip hoses; maintain/repair drip irrigation; flushlines; remove drip irrigation and layflat from fields prior to harvest;ensure layflat spools correctly when removing from field.
Other Irrigation Duties: observe revolving sprinklers and adjust toensure proper operation and uniform distribution of water; disassemble,service, and store pipes/mainlines/wheel lines after irrigation season.
Occasional duties related to the Production of Livestock will includethe following: check physical characteristics, observe general conditionof livestock and apply the appropriate care; assist in delivery; applyor administer medications, vaccines and/or insecticides; place mineralblocks; herd livestock; dock, castrate, brand, clip/tag and clamplivestock; fill/maintain water troughs.
Job duties may also require split and/or straight shifts depending onirrigation needs, such as 7:00 to 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Workhours may vary and there may be periods when little or no work will beavailable due to weather, time of year, and the requirements of thecropping program. Instruction, training, and general supervision will beprovided by the farm operator or a desig ated employee. However, theworker must perform required duties without close supervision and listento, understand, and follow simple instructions of the employer orsupervisor. The worker will be required to return worn out tools,supplies, and equipment before new ones will be provided. Most dutiesare performed out of doors and entail exposure to heat, cold, dust,rain, and other environmental conditions common in fields, includingmosquitoes during certain seasons. The worker must crouch, bend, andlift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds in the course ofperforming required activities.
The worker may be offered work seven days a week, as farm work must beperformed seven days a week. The worker will be required, however, towork the minimum number of hours indicated in job listing. The workermay be offered more than the specified hours per day, but is onlyrequired to work the hours specified. The worker may be requested, butwill not be required, to work on his/her Sabbath and/or on Federalholidays.
