This job requires : planting; pruning; thinning; training; harvesting ofapples, cherries, and grapes by the worker. Specific Job Requirements:CHERRY HARVEST: The Worker will hand harvest cherries. This can beperformed from a motorized platform and/or from the ground or ladder.The Worker will attach harness, bucket or bag and pick low hanging fruitwhile standing or on a ladder. The Worker will pick according to grade,color, and size by grasping fruit with the hands and removing from thetree in a motion so as not to harm adjacent buds on the tree branches.The Worker will carry a harness, bucket, or bag of up to 20 lbs and willplace fruit into plastic lugs which hold approximately 30 pounds offruit. Care must be exercised at all times to prevent bruising of fruitor breaking of branches. Some Workers may be required to examineharvested fruit in plastic/wooden bins and sort out any fruit notmeeting the grade, color, and size specifications. The worker mustpossess the ability to pick-up, handle a 10 ft. or 12 ft. orchard ladderweighing up to 40 pounds. THINNING: Thinning is a manual process used tocontrol the size and quality of grown fruit. The Worker must possess theability to pick up, handle a 10 ft. or 12 ft. orchard ladder weighing 40pounds. Furthermore, the Worker must be able to use scissor likeclippers. This process requires the Worker to remove, in some cases notlimited to the smallest fruit blossom, bud and/or identifiable fruitfrom within a cluster of other fruits. The Worker will be expected to beable to identify and remove fruit that is misshapen, damaged and/or withother quality problems as directed by supervisors. Thinning may beperformed from a motorized platform and/or from the ground or a ladder.Other Job Specifications Include: 1. Worker will care for youngnon-producing fruit trees and grape vines including various forms ofweeding to include hand weeding and gas or electric weeding tools,hoeing, trunk painting, hand fertilizing and growth selection by handand clipping. 2. Hand thinning of apple, cherry, and pear trees andgrape vines to ensure proper fruit load on tree. 3. Pruning of apple andcherry trees and grape vines to ensure proper fruit load on tree/vine.4. Training of grape vines, cherry, and apple trees to trellis,including clipping and tying limbs and shoots to wire. 5. Training andlimb positioning of apple tree, cherry trees, and grape vine. 6. Providegeneral labor to assist in the establishment of new orchard propertiesand vineyard by clearing property, planting trees, building trellis,irrigation installation, repair and spreading of composted material andany other labor considered necessary for the efficient structure of neworchard properties. 7. Care for trees during growing process- recognizetree disease such as of blighted branches in apples and gummosis incherries. 8. Harvest preparation including spreading liners in bins,rolling bins into blocks by hand. 9.Propping and tying of apple andcherry trees and limbs. 10.Repair sprinklers on overhead cooling system.11.Load and unload empty bins by hand and place in the orchard.12.Picking numerous varieties of apples and cherries according toestablished company procedures accounting for difference in thetreatment of different varieties. 13.Selectively pick only fruit of acertain color and/or size as instructed by the supervisor. 14.Handlefruit carefully and not bruise or damage fruit when it is placed in thebin. 15.Observation of bruised, damaged or cull fruit by the supervisorwill result in a bad bin mark and after three bad bin marks, the workerswil receive disciplinary action up to and including termination. A badbin mark occurs when a bin is inspected and a significant number ofculls, bruised or damaged are found by the supervisors. 16.Crushingapples and grapes by hand-operated crushing tools, electrically poweredmachines, and/or crushing fruit by pounding them in a bucket with acrushing tool. 17.Clean work areas and maintain grounds and landscaping(SOC Code 45-2092). 18.Farm clean up tasks to include picking up garbagearound the orchard, removing old string and wire from trellis andorchard blocks, and other hand tasks such as using a shovel to pullweeds. 19.The Worker must be adept at safely placing and using ladders.Much of the work will be done from an aluminum ladder up to 12 feet inheight. 20.Hand tools, such as pruning hooks, shears, and/or pickingbags will be utilized. Workers can also: 1. Drive tractors. 2. Sprayfertilizer or pesticide solutions to control insects, fungus and weedgrowth, and diseases, using hand sprayers. Load and mix chemicals inaddition to operating tractors pulling air blast sprayers. Workers willeither have a valid pesticide license or supervised by someone with avalid pesticide license. The Employer attests that these workers will beproperly trained by their supervisor who has a valid Private Applicatorslicense which is the standard pursuant to Washington State Department ofAgriculture (WSDA).
