It covers over 7,000 square miles and extends from the southern tip of Lake Superior to the Canadian Border. It is the largest county in the U.S., east of the Mississippi River. The area is known for its spectacular natural beauty including more than 500 sparkling lakes, a national forest, a national park, four state parks, and its rich iron range mining history. Agriculture in St. Louis County includes cattle/calves, poultry, goats, forages, pastures, small grains, fruit, and vegetable crops, which accounts for market values that exceed $17 million. With such an expansive geographic region, there are opportunities for untapped agriculture, horticulture and natural resources in the area. ABOUT THIS POSITION This Extension educator will primarily focus on providing education and support for education programs that are relevant to the local communities in the county. The Extension educator will demonstrate an ability to apply knowledge to new and future programs which enhance and expand the programming in agriculture, horticulture and forest products/management for private woodlands. This educator will collaborate with their Extension educator colleague in Agricultural Production Systems. In addition, this position will also work closely with the Horticulture educator in Duluth to coordinate programming. Special effort will be required to maintain competency in multiple Agricultural and Natural Resource Systems (ANR) discipline areas as well as knowledge of local/federal/state related programs. Emphasis areas with this position include small farms, horticulture, forages, beef production, forest products and private woodland management. THIS POSITION WILL: Provide research-based agriculture, horticulture and agritourism resources, education, and support. Build relationships with agricultural professionals to foster educational efforts and economic development. Provide relevant education and support to agriculture and agritourism stakeholders. Design/conduct educational programs and make them accessible and inviting to diverse participants. Provide technical assistance and expertise in the areas of agriculture, horticulture, natural resources, and agritourism. Communicate effectively and positively with colleagues and stakeholders about the work. Regularly attend County Extension Committee (CEC) meetings in St. Louis County, engaging and reporting to stakeholders. For example: Design, develop, deliver/implement, and evaluate local ANR educational programs based on local needs and expectations, developing and maintaining effective county, regional, University and state partnerships that further the development and delivery of Extension educational programs. Engage with producers, agricultural professionals, private woodland owners, county foresters, land management professionals and stakeholders to build rapport and working relationships to benefit educational efforts. Collate Extension agritourism resources, research, educational programs, and networks. Utilize numerous delivery methods to teach agricultural and natural resource topics that are important to maintaining the viability, profitability, and sustainability of agricultural operations in St. Louis County. Adapt Extension programs for audiences with a range of knowledge, bac ground, and cultures. Work in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) agencies, Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD), Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), county environmental and land management services, noxious weed inspector and agricultural and natural resources professional organizations to provide educational programs relevant to the county. Provide Extension and university resources to support agritourism in the region. Provide technical assistance and information in the areas of agriculture, forest products, private woodland management and agritourism based on local needs and expectations. Ensure that Extension programs, facilities, committees, and employment opportunities are accessible to new, diverse, and historically underserved audiences. Grow as a professional through publication, attendance at conferences, self-directed study, and other means. Document your professional performance using the annual performance review, professional plan of work and promotion for educators without rank. SALARY/BENEFITS/APPOINTMENT Internal promotion is available. Meeting the promotion policy criteria to achieve promotion is expected. A full University of Minnesota benefits package is available: . Salary commensurate with education and experience. Estimated starting salary is $51,000-$55,000 and will be negotiated at time of offer. This is a salaried, not hourly, position Reimbursement for travel and subsistence is available in accordance with University policy. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree (by start date of position) in an agriculture related discipline, i.e. agronomy, soils, livestock production, horticulture, agricultural economics, agricultural education, and/or other closely related field. Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills. A proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships and collaborations with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders, including those that may have diverse missions, goals, cultures, and backgrounds. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion. Skilled in Microsoft and Google Workspace applications. Additional Requirements: Valid driver's license and own means of transportation with required liability insurance. When not in the assigned office location, employees must be reachable with a number that will be published in the Extension staff directory. Must have reliable internet if/when working outside of assigned office location. Must be able to travel within the designated communities and provide in-person programming. Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including occasional evening or weekend work. This position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship. Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree. Current experience in production agriculture and/or professional experience in the agricultural industry, government, or non-profit organizations involving agriculture.
