This internship offers the opportunity to gain additional experience in preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and construction of landfill infrastructure including both vertical facilities and horizontal systems. Includes operation of a variety of light and heavy equipment and use of skilled trades such as electrical, mechanical, and building construction. The program will provide the intern with a constructive review and evaluation of their skills and competencies, providing growth opportunities and direction to further their professional and educational development.

Department Responsibilities:
Equipment Operation
Operating light and heavy equipment with mechanical attachments which require the manipulation of controls and attachments.
Heavy equipment includes but is not limited to: farm tractor, truck with trailer, loader, dozer, excavator, backhoe and skid steerer.
Light equipment includes various air or gas operated hand tools such as lawn mowers, chain saws, electrical saws, drills, and mechanical hand tools.
Duties include but are not limited to mowing, trimming, land clearing, brush removal, grading, ditch rehabilitation, erosion repair, installation and repair of culverts and pipes.
Equipment Repair
Preventative maintenance as per operator's manual on a daily/weekly/hourly basis as described in equipment manuals. Make hydraulic and mechanical repairs if possible, to prevent down time. Repair small engines, tools as needed, repairing and/or replacing worn or broken parts.Infrastructure Services
Electrical - Test components for failures and make repairs or make recommendations for repairs to any electrical system in the infrastructure. Uses proper testing equipment and safety measures. Work includes changing switches, light bulbs, fixtures, ballasts, relays, etc.
Plumbing - Work with all types of pipe, including copper, schedule 40, schedule 80, steel or compressed air. Troubleshoot and or repair toilets, sinks, hot water tanks, RO systems, meters, pumps, etc.
Fence - Install, repair, and upgrade chain link, hog wire, barb wire, and wooden fences and gate related issues.
Welding and Fabrication - Repair and construct items from various materials including sheet metal, structural steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. MiG or arc welding, drilling, grinding, use of oxygen/acetylene torch and plasma cutting. Bolting, rivet and screw projects as needed.
Carpentry and Painting - Basic carpentry skills such as drywall repair, ceiling tile replacement, door and window adjustments, weather caulking and hurricane protection. Interior and exterior painting of structures, buildings, curbing and safety related items.
General - assist with repairs to landfill infrastructure such as landfill gas collection and destruction system, groundwater monitoring system, stormwater system. Ability to utilize survey equipment such as a laser level.
Safety - maintains landfill sites for safety including installation and repair of directional signs, site signage, bollards and roadblocks.
Vegetation Control - sprays vegetation with County approved herbicides under the direction of a licensed technician.
Stormwater Systems - conducts inspection and makes repairs to stormwater system infrastructure at landfill facilities.
Surveying - performs basic survey skills such as setting elevations and placing stakes.
Collaborate with your department colleagues to make and influence real changes.
Internship Program Responsibilities:
A presentation to the County Administrator and other County Leadership staff is required at the close of the internship program.

About You
Minimum Qualifications:
At least 18 years old, or age 16 with parental consent
High school diploma, or equivalent (if applicable)
Eligible to work in the United States – we love local, national, and international students!
Active student, or graduated August 2023 or later
About Everything Else
Program Dates: The 2024 internship program will begin on May 20, 2024 and end on August 9, 2024.
Internship Hours: 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; some departments vary.
Pay Range: $13 per hour (high school student) up to $20 per hour (Grad/Masters student), based on your credit hours earned.
