  The Work You Will Do:

  This position is for a GIS Analyst.

  This position will work with the STATEMAP program area within the Florida Geological Survey to support all ongoing mapping needs.

  Position supports geologic mapping initiatives and supports field data collection.

  Position will assure timely compilation of legacy data, assist with data structure and management of ongoing projects including generating maps and GIS coverages, maintaining GIS and data needs for mapping projects, finding and processing datasets, assisting in publication of maps and technical reports, and verifying sample data as needed.

  The vacancy is within the Florida Geological Survey’s Geological Investigations section.

  The Position will work with OPS staff to ensure project tasks are on time and meet standards.

  Pay:

  Pay for this position will be $51,000 - $53,000 (commensurate with experience)

  Your Specific Responsibilities:

  Conducts and assists with environmental/geological research and mapping as it relates to products contributing to responsible use and understanding of Florida’s natural resources. Specific responsibilities include planning, designing, directing, producing, and editing GIS projects for geological mapping analysis and interpretation.

  Coordinates and supports STATEMAP team geologic mapping and data collection needs and GIS functions by:

  Compiling and maintaining data for the STATEMAP Program.

  Coordinating and managing legacy data for statewide mapping program, performing fieldwork for data collection as needed, and publishing mapping results.

  Developing and maintaining routines and scripts that automate ArcGIS tasks for FGS geologic research programs.

  Assisting with building, maintaining, and revising ArcGIS projects and mapping products.

  Supporting the collection, maintenance, and analysis of geological spatial and attribute information using appropriate database and GIS-related tools and software.

  Designing, managing, and converting existing FGS hard copy and digital files for GIS-compatibility.

  Preparing technical documentation on GIS processes and programs.

  Following DEP metadata standards.

  Providing technical support for the FGS STATEMAP web page, including associated digital publications such as ArcGIS online map products.

  Assisting with project fieldwork as needed.

  GIS Standardization/Administration: Coordinate with senior scientific staff to develop computer cartographic and database standards for geologic maps and illustrations. Prepare protocols and data and media standards for digital GIS-related files as specified. Work with staff to define system hardware and software requirements and specifications necessary to carry out GIS implementation and data conversion. Assist DEP staff in GIS programs with accessing and utilizing the FGS digital map library.

  GIS/Geologic Research: Assist with project-specific environmental and geological research with special emphasis on GIS analysis for geological research applications. Prepare environmental, geological, and GIS-related information and products for surveys, reports, projects, and presentations. Work to develop and maintain GIS field mapping applications on tablets and mobile devices. Compile and process new environmental datasets as needed for project development.

  Attend training courses and meetings related to GIS, image analysis, and mapping standardization.

  Perform other duties as required.

  Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  Skill in the use of Geographic Information Systems and software including ArcPro, Spatial Analyst, and 3D Analyst.

  Knowledge of terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of GIS programming including ArcGIS Online, Story Maps and Field Maps.

  Familiarity with database design for GIS compatibility and conversion of existing graphics and data to GIS format including GIS and geodatabase design and digital map library development.

  Familiarity with terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of the physical or natural sciences, including the principles and procedures of data collection and analysis.

  Familiarity with cartographic terminology, principles, and techniques.

  Skill in the methods of data collection.

  Ability to assist in the preparation of technical reports and publications.

  Ability to communicate technical information effectively verbally and in writing.

  Ability to coordinate work assignments of others and ensure proper completion of work assignments.

  Ability to collect, evaluate, analyze, and interpret scientific or technical data.

  Ability to train and mentor.

  Ability to work independently.

  Ability to interact with customers and the public in a tactful and courteous manner.

  Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments to meet program and department goals.

  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

  Ability to apply critical thinking to solve problems and improve procedures.

  Required Qualifications:

  High school diploma or GED equivalent, and two years of verifiable related work experience, as described in this posting.

  Ability to maintain a valid Class Driver’s License.

  Ability to travel and perform field work.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college; or

  any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described in this posting , for a total of four years.
