IT@JH Cloud and Virtualization Services is seeking an Enterprise IT Architect who is the lead engineering role for Research IT. Oversees design, deployment and manages research project’s cloud infrastructure, governance, security, onboarding and troubleshooting. Core technical lead for research cloud infrastructure’s compliance and security.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Works closely with JHU researcher, assess their cloud infrastructure requirements, design custom Azure/AWS cloud solutions tailored to fit their requirements, growth & budget.
Designs and implements secure and scalable Azure/AWS infrastructure and solutions that meet researcher requirements, industry standards and best security practices.
Implements Azure and AWS cloud services and lead building cloud-native services and solutions.
Cloud Architecture and Design, expert level hands on experience with Azure IaaS, PaaS and SaaS services.
Responsible for compliance of research infrastructure, regularly conduct assessments, review, and co-ordinate with teams to make sure deployment are per compliance standards and remediate any noncompliance resources.
Establishes architecture framework for cloud-based delivery that enables cloud native development and integration with cloud providers.
Provides support and guidance to other internal teams and team members based on case studies and best practices.
Maintains quality documentation for enterprise-wide solutions, standards and best practices.
Specific Devices, Software, Projects
Architect lead for the Microsoft Trusted Research Environment, Secure Enclave and Safe desktop 2.0.
Design, deploy and manage multiple web hosting solutions for research dashboards, using App services, SQL databases, SQL MI, No SQL database, load balancer, key vault, PE and CDN.
Design, deploy and manage multiple analytics, data warehouse and AI projects that need Databricks, ML, Open AI, ADLS 2.0, HPC, Terrabio.
Setup security and compliance framework for research infrastructure. Utilize Azure Policy and AWS config to identify and remediate non-compliant resources.
Scale/size of Area, Project and/or System Supported
Architect lead for the Microsoft Trusted Research Environment (TRE) and actively participating in the Safe Desktop 2.0 development. The SAFE Desktop implemented along with the TRE will provide access to Research NAS, the Research HPC and Azure resources in a NIST 800-171 compliant environment. This environment will be used by thousands of researchers having a significant impact on how research compute services are delivered at JH. This project includes participating in the workflow for SAFE image creation, image porting to the Azure image gallery, Citrix integration, working with DCE on VDI addressing concerns, dynamically creating and securing communication between customer Azure resources, working with AD for user authentication, monitoring for security monitoring and log forwarding. There’s also a large help desk and Service Now component.
Designed, deployed, and maintained an enterprise class secure and scalable web app infrastructure to support 2100 external users for the Washington State DMV truck driver assessment Hazard Perception Research Project. This project, built in a custom domain, integrated services from Front Door, Front and backend App services, Cosmos DB, Storage accounts, and secured with private endpoints. The log forwarding, to Splunk, used in this project has been the model used for other Azure services.
Primary engineer to maintain the infrastructure for the CRISP-Covid registry. This project involved the migration of data into a new secure and scalable ETL environment and several managed services & components that enable analysts to create data projections of OMOP tables and build a repository. A ETL pipeline was developed to get the data from the state of MD CRISP FTP server to our Azure development repository. This data can be used, read only workspaces, by other customers to perform further analysis. AD RBAC permissions are leveraged to isolate projections.
Infrastructure Engineering lead for a project VIRA. it is a chatbot from Johns Hopkins that answers COVID-19 vaccine questions. This project was migration from IBM to JHU. It involves implementation of AKS cluster, Cosmos Mongo API, Azure container registry. AKS contains dialog manager, vira-intent-classification, and vira-dialog-act-classification components to support solution. This is a backend solution.
Maintain project EDIT Suite that provides clinical decision support system to physicians. Project involved multiple phases of implementations, phase 1 is completed and phase 2 is in progress. It involves multi layered infrastructure and each contains several components. Azure services like app services, function app, SQL Managed instance, logic app, key vaults, storage account have been deployed. Project has three independent infrastructures deployed for development, QA and production.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Hands on experience with Azure and AWS enterprise scale reference architecture experience in creating architecture.
Deep cloud understanding of core cloud IaaS, PaaS and SaaS services.
IaC, cloud network, cloud security, compliance, automation, CI/CD.
Experience addressing horizontal, vertical scaling, performance, resilience, recovery, security and privacy.
Strong communication skills.

Bachelor’s Degree required.
Eight years of related work experience with computer systems and applications.
