Unit: AFSCME Unit II, 1st Class Powerplant Engineer, Grade 21Department: Facilities Department Reports To: Director of FacilitiesSummary: The purpose of this position is to inspect, test, repair,install and/or maintain various types of electrical systems andequipment in all college facilities; troubleshoot electrical andfire-alarm equipment; maintain adequate inventory of equipment andmaterials; inspect work of outside contractors and other collegeelectricians; determine materials and/or equipment necessary forspecific jobs including recommending whether or not to use outsidecontractors; and writes technical specifications for bids on electricalequipment. Essential Job Functions: Inspects, tests, repairs, installsand/or maintains various types of electrical systems and equipment byoperating the appropriate equipment and tools to ensure propermaintenance and functioning of necessary equipment. Maintains anadequate inventory of equipment and materials by contacting vendors forprices, ordering equipment and materials through purchase request forms,and writing technical specifications for equipment purchases asnecessary. Inspects the work of outside contractors to ensure compliancewith safety codes and regulations. Determines on-the-job procedurechanges by consulting with Facilities Staff, outside contractors andengineers to obtain technical advice and to coordinate and complete workprojects. Troubleshoots electrical and related equipment by usingnecessary equipment and reading schematics, diagrams and outlines toidentify and correct operational problems. Determines acceptable qualityof materials and/or equipment necessary for a job to ensure thatcompleted work projects comply with specifications. Performs relatedduties such as reviewing technical data to keep abreast of developmentsin the field; resetting fire alarms systems; determine the need to shutoff electrical power in an emergency; drafting schematics, diagrams andoutlines; and providing on-the-job training. Attends meetings, seminars,workshops, etc., to gather and exchange information. Maintains reportson work progress and work forecasts, preventive maintenance schedules,repairs information, costs and times involved with various activities.Routinely assists in the inspection of mechanical equipment and itsassociated operating and control components for all the heating,ventilation and air-conditioning systems at the college. Assists othertradespeople when required during urgent repair situations and duringemergencies such as plumbing leaks, sprinkler problems and natural gasleaks. Routinely informs Facilities staff of safety issues of all typesbeyond those of an electrical nature. Operates computerized energymanagement systems used to control the heating and cooling of collegebuildings. Assumes significant responsibility for the collegeelectrical, fire alarm and security lighting systems and theirassociated equipment when problems develop. Serves as a first responseteam member for all types of urgent problems and emergencies. Performstandby duty, and report to campus after hours, as necessary, to respondto emergencies and effectuate necessary repairs. Requirements: Applicantmust have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time,experience as a Licensed Journeyman or Master Electrician. Possession ofa current and valid Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Electrician\'sLicense issued by the State Examiners of Electricians.
