This position is in the Aircraft Carrier Design and Systems Engineering Directorate (SEA 05V) at Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). This position will be at the Washington Navy Yard. The incumbent serves as a Digital Transformation Systems Engineer directly supporting the Nimitz (CVN68) and Ford (CVN78) Class Aircraft Carrier Ship Design Managers (SDMs) and Digital, Network, Cyber Group (DNCG) System Engineering Manager. Supported areas include: Digital Transformation (3-D Product Models, Model Based System Engineering, Product Life Cycle software, and SharePoint Online), Machinery Control and; Monitoring System (MCMS), Federated Machinery Local Area Network (FMLAN), Steering Gear Control System, Voice, Video, Navigation, Integrated Bridge System, Auxiliary and/or Electrical System field device support, data logging and damage control software applications, and supporting digital transformation of engineering processes. Occasional travel may be expected in this position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide technical support and assess risk for technical decisions for Nimitz (CVN 68) and Ford (CVN 78) Class Ship Design Managers (SDMs) and System Engineering Manager (SEM)
Provide engineering assessment, research, and problem resolution utilizing Nimitz (CVN 68) and/or Ford (CVN 78) operational experience.
Provide responses to requests for technical assistance or adjudication received via letter, Departure from Specification (DFS), Liaison Action Request (LAR), Steam Plant Action Request (SPAR), Availability Work Package (AWP) Change Request
Participate and coordinate technical approval letters for Ship Alteration (ShipAlts) and Technical Assessment Team (TAT) reviews for Ship Change Documents (SCDs)
Review Technical Feedback Reports (TFBRs) for Planned Maintenance System (PMS) changes requiring Designated Technical Representative (DTR) review.
Coordinate with Engineering Agents, Technical Authorities, TYCOM, PMS 312, PMS 378, SUPSHIP Newport News, Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY), Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS), Ship Repair Facility (SRF), & other activities to resolve technical matters
Review technical data packages, drawings, reports, logistics products, training, etc. and provide technical recommendations
Develop formal presentations to brief to senior officials.
Review ship, procurement, and systems specifications and submit proposals for changes
Qualifications:
Engineer with a four-year degree and 7 years’ experience with Navy, Coast Guard, or Merchant Marine.
Experience with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) based distributed control systems.
Experience with US Navy, Coast Guard or Merchant Marine vessels (preferably nuclear powered ships)
Good project management, technical writing, and organizational skills
Preferred/Desired:
Engineer with degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, or Systems engineering from an accredited university
Control system design experience.
Experience with COMET for sharing 3D product models
Experience with programming of PLC’s.
Machinery data logging experience.
Strong understanding of machinery control network architectures.
Worked with or at a shipyard, Naval Surface/Undersea Warfare Center (NSWC/NUWC), Supervisor of Shipbuilding Command (SUPSHIP), Regional Maintenance Center (RMC), and/or Type Commander (TYCOM) supporting construction, operation, maintenance, modernization, and/or repair of shipboard systems
Experience working with technical authority (e.g. NAVSEA 05 and 08)
Experience working with program managers (e.g. PEO Carriers, PMS 312, PMS 378, etc.) in an engineering role
Experience with shipboard networks and systems
Experience with US Navy, USCG or MSC vessels.
Engineering technician who was qualified to stand duty as an Engineering Duty Officer (EDO)
Preferably experience with aircraft carriers
