Director of E&S Academic Advising
Manager of Academic Advising (Band G)
Environment and Sustainability
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Ithaca, NY
Who We Are:
The Environment & Sustainability (E&S) program is an interdisciplinary major that became cross-college in 2018, drawing students from both the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) who are admitted into the major and Arts and Sciences (A&S) students who declare the major once at Cornell. E&S boasts a rigorous yet flexible curriculum that builds strong communication, reasoning, and analytical skills in students to address today's grand sustainability challenges. The curriculum includes classes from over 15 departments with an emphasis on experiential learning and integrative pedagogy. The E&S major is one of the largest at Cornell, an Ivy League campus credited with strong sustainability credentials and accomplishments. E&S graduates are finding success in environmental consulting firms, government agencies, NGOs and graduate school. The E&S program office houses 3 full-time staff and includes space for student studying and socializing.
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University's second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy, and environmental resources; and social, physical, and economic well-being.
The College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) is the liberal arts college at Cornell, and the largest in size at 4,800 undergraduate students. Offering more than 40 majors and 2,000+ courses, our diverse and expansive academic community embraces collaboration, active and experiential learning models, and a commitment to research and scholarly excellence.
What you will do:
While position responsibilities vary, all people leaders are expected to foster a culture of belonging and a psychologically healthy work environment by being trustworthy; respecting all individuals; being flexible; supporting work/life integration as well as healthy boundaries; inviting new ideas, alternatives, and perspectives; speaking up and taking action if others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and recognizing the contributions of others.
This position offers the opportunity to support Environment and Sustainability (E&S) students through an academic advising system that crosses two colleges at Cornell (College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences). This will be accomplished by collaborating with student support and advising offices in both colleges, along with other important Cornell partners focused on student success and well-being. This work requires extensive engagement with faculty and staff across several departments and colleges as the major is interdisciplinary and dependent upon resources and course offerings from numerous partners.
Success in this role will be defined by offering equitable advising and support to all students in the E&S major and managing program needs in collaboration with the E&S faculty director. The advising model should be centered on mechanisms for enabling academic success and include support for students from historically excluded, under-resourced and nontraditional backgrounds while developing activities and programs designed to contribute to a sense of belonging and community among all E&S students. Success in program management will be defined by the efficacy of systems for tracking student data and outcomes, for achieving broad student-faculty engagement for mentoring, and for planning inclusive events.
Reporting to the Faculty Director of the E&S Major, the Director of E&S Academic Advising will be a dynamic and inspirational leader with respect to coordinating E&S undergraduate academic advising and support as well as managing key program objectives. Our new colleague will bring a solid foundation in DE&I to lead the integration of an equitable academic advising model with a deliberate focus on ensuring students from historically excluded, under-resourced and non-traditional backgrounds are well supported in the major. The individual in this role will take responsibility for developing a professional academic advising system and implementing programming that will engage students in new and innovative pathways to belonging and academic success in E&S, from the moment they are identified as prospects, through graduation, and as a member of our passionate community of alumni. As a unit leader, the successful candidate will manage skilled academic advising staff to promote and enhance dedication to student development, support, and advocacy with belonging and inclusion at the core. The E&S program office uses sustainability best practices in its operations, so the ideal candidate will support and further this culture.
Key Responsibilities
Developing a professional advising support model for the E&S major offered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences. This will be a highly complex effort that includes developing and managing a student advising strategy that is equitable and meets the different needs of students from each college. Model development will be accomplished by strong collaboration with the faculty director along with the advising and academic leadership from both colleges, whereas close collaboration with program staff will make for successful implementation. The model must create equitable academic advising across the major and facilitate engagement of faculty as mentors to enrich the student experience in the major. With this model the Director of E&S Academic Advising will be expected to advise, advocate for and support students, manage a team of academic advisors, monitor and evaluate student success, and assure support for a faculty-taught first year advising course. The Director of E&S Academic Advising will be responsible for student communications and visibility of the major offerings, requirements, and policies on the website and in Cornell's Courses of Study. Creating a system for engaging with program alumni is needed for their ongoing support of the major to offer mentoring, advice, and career guidance to current E&S students. Annually oversee the programs and events important to the E&S student experience from admission to graduation. Work closely with the faculty director on strategic efforts for the overall administration of the program including staff management, budgets, curriculum needs, policies, annual reports, technology innovations and supporting the E&S curriculum committee. Oversee the appropriate involvement of E&S staff in campus-wide committees and activities that support the goals of student development; serve as liaison to various organizations within the campus community; represent the major on administrative committees and boards, such as committees serving Deans, Directors, and Department Chairs.
