  General Information

  The School of Music at James Madison University seeks an exceptional and experienced musician and leader, able to collaborate with faculty and students in an innovative, enriching, educational environment, for a full-time, tenure-track or tenured position as Director of Bands at the Associate Professor or Professor rank, to begin in Fall 2024. The Director of Bands will join a dynamic, collaborative, and collegial team of faculty who are working together to build a curriculum that is just, equitable, and responsive to the needs of the next generation of musicians. Our new colleague will bring a vision for audience development, community engagement, and outreach aligned with the profession.The successful candidate will join the School of Music, a highly engaged and active program with more than 380 undergraduate music majors and 70 graduate students. The School of Music offers a Doctor of Musical Arts (conducting and performance), a Master of Music (composition, conducting, music education, and performance), a Bachelor of Music (composition, jazz studies, music education, music industry, music theatre, and performance), and a Bachelor of Arts in Music (music industry and music studies). The school has 45 full-time faculty, 25 part-time faculty, and 10 professional staff and supportive positions, and produces more than 300 performances and presentations annually. Additionally, the School of Music offers students the benefits of an All-Steinway School and state-of-the-art performance venues in the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts.

  Duties and Responsibilities

  Responsibilities include conducting the

  JMU Wind Symphony, teaching undergraduate and graduate conducting and graduate wind literature, team-teaching the Graduate Conducting Seminar with the Director of Choral Activities and Director of Orchestral Studies, and managin graduate teaching assistants. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the Associate and Assistant Directors of Bands and band program staff to oversee the comprehensive college band program, including Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, the 510-member

  JMU Marching Royal Dukes, and Basketball Pep Bands. We are especially interested in candidates who will develop a vision for the band program that contributes to a dynamic and progressive curriculum. Other duties may be assigned based on the skills and experience of the candidate and departmental needs. Our new colleague will also demonstrate interest and engagement in JMU's annual Contemporary Music Festival, composer residencies, Harmoniemusik, and related activities. In addition to teaching, the candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a visible profile locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. The successful candidate will actively engage in band program and School of Music recruiting efforts and maintain a strong rapport with public school teachers throughout the state and region through on- and off-campus activities, including the annual

  JMU Summer Concert Band Camp.

  Qualifications

  Required qualifications include:

  A demonstrated record of exceptional musicianship as a conductor.A demonstrated ability to engage with music educators and students in the region and beyond to successfully recruit students for a large music program.Evidence of a national/international profile as a conductor, clinician, and educator.A terminal degree in music or equivalent professional experience.Experience and success programming diverse and expansive repertoire.Evidence of innovative contributions in wind studies through undergraduate and graduate teaching, curricular design, and engaged scholarship.Ability to manage and further develop a large, complex program through budgetary and administrative acumen.A demonstrated record of effective collaborative work with music faculty.Preferred qualifications include:

  Evidence of an active creative/research agenda as a conductor that offers varied perspectives on wind studies.Demonstrated record of service and/or outreach at all relevant levels. (department/university/community/professional).Familiarity with music technology, digital media, and/or interactive media.Record of collaboration with professional and student composers.Conditions of Employment
