The IMS Director, Engineering Operations, provides dually focused leadership over engineering operations for the IMS Segment. The Director reports directly to the VP of Engineering for IMS.
Within the engineering operations focus, the Director coordinates with our Sector business leaders, engineering discipline leaders and Corporate Engineering Operations leadership to measure and analyze engineering productivity and quality, and define and drive continuous improvement strategies and plans. The successful Director leverages industry best practices and prior experience across the segment to raise the bar of overall performance. The Director leads engineering continuous improvement through L3Harris’ operational excellence program (E3 – excellence, everywhere, everyday.)
This Director stays aligned with overall business performance objectives and leads the Engineering organization in delivering value toward these ends via engineering operational excellence and digital engineering tools, capabilities and initiatives.
Primary Responsibilities
Digital Engineering Transformation
Drive the overall operational business rhythm for the engineering factory.
Develop objectives, roadmap, and plans to deliver capability and improve the digital design maturity inside IMS, striving for commonality and synergy across engineering in alignment with CHQ objectives
Partner with IT, Finance, and Corporate Engineering and other segments, to develop a digital strategy and tools plan, which enables our objectives towards a fully integrated digital thread,.
Stay abreast of relevant industry developments, including new approaches, platforms, standards, and methodologies; develop and implement strategies to meet emerging technology trends.
Participate in industry boards and associations as a representative for L3Harris.
Tools
Lead and coordinate the IMS representation on the corporate Cross Segment Engineering Discipline Team in development of standard tools
Plan and establish common tools across the segment Engineering organization.
Metrics
Coordinate sector discipline leads to define corporate-wide standard metrics for productivity and quality to maximize utility and business impact.
Drive implementation, use and reporting cadence of engineering metrics. Track and understand performance versus goals. Drive continuous improvement via preventative and corrective action.
Responsible for development of metrics and measures associated with tracking and improving the quality of the engineering products.
Ownership of IMS Engineering Scorecard including gathering, compiling, and preparing scorecard information for monthly Engineering Operations reviews.
Development Policies and Procedures
Provide review and segment signoff of corporate-level Engineering policies and processes. Provide high-level review and guidance for sector engineering processes.
Ensure knowledge sharing of best practices across the IMS segment and develop/monitor technical standards to ensure adherence to them.
Establish and deploy common tools and processes for the IMS Engineering organization
Value Engineering
Represent IMS engineering at e3 and Value Engineering meetings/discussions.
Set the engineering vision, develop and implement the roadmap for the E3 Program. Develop and deploy goals and manage e3 actions in alignment with program goals and business objectives.
As part of the overall e3 process, track engineering metrics and productivities associated with work scope; lead implementation of continuous process and productivity improvement initiatives
Develop, improve and deploy the e3 Engineering framework including the toolkit for Value Engineering, DFx, COPQ (Cost of poor quality), process improvement and other tools to help drive continuous improvement activities within the IMS engineering organization
Staff Activities
As a senior member of the IMS Engineering staff you may be asked act as delegate for segment VP of Engineering including at engineering operations functions and trade compliance meetings.
Serve as a hands-on engineering leader, who easily gains the respect of senior and junior engineers
Lead segment level engineering awards, E-Week activities. Share in staffing & talent development.
Temporary assignments to critical pursuits, proposals, or programs.
Qualifications & Skills
Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field or equivalent with a minimum of 15 years of prior engineering experience OR Graduate Degree with a minimum of 13 years of prior engineering experience
Ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance, which requires US Citizenship
Preferred Qualifications
Experience leading multi-site and remote functional teams
Understanding of development and deployment of continuous improvement programs
Experience providing compelling technological briefings to executive level stakeholders
Proven ability to translate the vision/strategy into clear priorities and direction
Confident leader with demonstrated ability to lead by influence
Experience navigating matrix organizations; identify stakeholders and synergy among related efforts
Able to work in a multi-level complex project schema—navigating a vague and broad space, to define plans and options, and align stakeholders across sites and various business units.
