About DIGITAL IMAGING SPECIALIST, University Libraries

  Boston University Libraries seeks a Digital Imaging Specialist, who will play a key role in increasing the digital presence and research viability of Boston University’s archival and special collections through the production and management of digital archival images. Reporting to the Director of Digital Ventures, this position is responsible for the implementation of imaging workflows, which include making consistent, informed, technical decisions regarding lighting set up, quality control, and file management.

  The Digital Imaging Specialist also works with specialized image capture systems designed for the digitization of cultural heritage material and ensures the continuity of collections imaging by aligning practice with standards for archival image production.

  In addition to managing imaging processes, this position will also be responsible for hiring, training, and supervising student employees, as well as the monitoring and management of digitization equipment and software.

  Responsibilities for this position include:

  Configuration and optimal use of digitization cameras (e.g., PhaseOne medium format; mirrorless), while considering best practices for image capture, object handling, and project goals.

  Creating and updating procedures and workflows to support a comprehensive digitization program.

  Photographing rare or unique items held in Boston University Libraries collections, including fragile volumes, documents, three dimensional objects, oversize items, and photographic media.

  Performing file management and quality control. Reviewing files to ensure alignment with archival standards and practices (e.g., FADGI) for the production of digital images through use of targets, lighting, and software applications.

  Supervising and training student workers.

  Managing and maintaining digitization equipment and software, as well as providing recommendations for upgrades over time.

  Collaborating with the Digital Collections Librarian, Archival Information Specialist, and other project stakeholders to successfully complete digitization projects, including providing support for promoting digital collections through community outreach, exhibits and displays, and communication in collaboration with project partners and libraries staff.

  Contribute to regional, national, and international communities of practice where appropriate.

  Required Skills

  MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution or a related field; OR equivalent work experience.

  Familiarity with standards for care and handling of rare and fragile materials.

  Familiarity with operating and maintaining a range of capture and imaging technology, camera and scanner hardware, such as the Digital Transitions system with Phase One cameras and Capture One software.

  Familiarity with digital image editing software, data management, and processing, such as Capture One, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Bridge.

  Ability to effectively lead a team and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders.

  Working knowledge of best practices and trends in digital photography, capture, color management, formats, conversions, and standards for digital objects.

  Demonstrated ability of working well both independently and collaboratively to inspire a shared vision with colleagues and students in a rapidly changing and diverse campus environment.

  Familiarity with batch processing related to image conversion and manipulation.

  Preferred Qualifications

  · Demonstrated understanding of managing equipment and operating procedures in a cultural heritage digital imaging lab.

  · Project management experience, with demonstrated ability to manage projects, plan and execute workflows, track progress and meet deadlines and objectives.

  · Knowledge of metadata practices and standards for cultural heritage imaging.

  · Experience with batch processing related to image conversion and manipulation.
