  General Job Description

  Development Officer I:

  This is an entry-level, professional position responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding prospective financial donors of the university. Responsible for advising individuals on issues associated with charitable giving and maintaining professional relationships with current, former, and prospective donors. Responsible for working with assigned schools, colleges, etc. to develop programs and activities for raising private funds. Travels extensively in order to develop and maintain relationships with donors and potential donors. Reports to the Associate Vice President of University Advancement.

  Development Officer II:

Responsible for planning, executing, and administering development programs and activities for raising private funds for assigned schools/colleges. Travels extensively in order to develop and maintain relationships with donors and potential donors. Reports to the Associate Vice President of University Advancement.

  Development Officer III :

  This is a professional position responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding prospective financial donors of the university. Responsible for advising individuals on issues associated with charitable giving and maintaining professional relationships with current, former, and prospective donors. Responsible for planning, executing, and administering development programs and activities for raising private funds for assigned schools/colleges. Coordinates development initiatives across the university. Travels extensively in order to develop and maintain relationships with donors and potential donors. Reports to the Associate Vice President of University Advancement.

  Essential Job Functions

  Development Officer I:

  Identifies, analyzes, and recommends sources of financial support for the university.

  Works with assigned schools, colleges, etc. to plan and coordinate fundraising programs and activities with expectations of meeting and/or exceeding established goals.

  Fosters positive, lasting relationships through personal contact with donors that produce repeat and increased annual, major and planned gifts.

  Represents assigned departments at social and professional functions, including functions that require travel.

  Provides ongoing information for academic leadership and faculty regarding fundraising initiatives.

  Plans and coordinates meetings and social events to recruit and retain university donors.

  Prepares proposals and presentations for donor prospects, solicits gifts, and negotiates gift agreements.

  Collaborates with development staff colleagues, members of the Board of Trustees, and key volunteers regarding cultivation and solicitation strategies.

  Pursues, expands, and shares expertise and knowledge through participation in applicable professional organizations.

  Requires frequent travel, evening, weekend, and potential holiday work as well as regular meetings with visitors, alumni leaders, and donors.

  Solicits and receives private funds from individuals, organizations, and others for university, college, and departmental discretionary accounts.

  Development Officer III :

  Plans and coordinates fundraising programs and activities for assigned schools, colleges, etc. with expectations of meeting and/or exceeding established goals.

  Oversees major gifts program(s) for assigned schools/colleges.

  Coordinates development initiatives across the university, which include work with various campus administrators.

  Fosters positive, lasting relationships through personal contact with donors that produce repeat and increased annual, major and planned gifts.

  Represents assigned departments at social and professional functions, including functions that require travel.

  Plays a leadership role in all external relationship building with a variety of constituencies.

  Provides ongoing information for academic leadership and faculty regarding fundraising initiatives.

  Plans and coordinates meetings and social events to recruit and retain university donors.

  Prepares proposals and presentations for donor prospects, solicit gifts, and negotiates gift agreements.

  Collaborates with development staff colleagues, members of the Board of Trustees, and key volunteers regarding cultivation and solicitation strategies.

  Pursues, expands, and shares expertise and knowledge through participation in applicable professional organizations.

  Requires frequent travel, evening, weekend, and potential holiday work as well as regular meetings with visitors, alumni leaders, and donors.

  Knowledge of procedures and related aspects of fundraising, including: annual giving, planning giving, campaign management, and strategic planning.

  Organizational skills in managing projects simultaneously while maintaining a satisfactory work product.

  Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.

  Skill in public speaking and delivering presentations to individuals and groups.

  Ability to learn office- and university-specific software.

  Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

  Ability to set priorities and complete assignments on time.

  Ability to work collaboratively and build strategic relations with colleagues, coworkers, constituents, and volunteers.

  Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.

  Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision.

  Ability to develop creative ways to solve a problem.

  Ability to meet or exceed established fundraising goals.

  Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

  Physical Demands

  Required Education

  Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required.

  Required Experience and Training

  Development Officer I: One year of related experience is required. Experience in sales, fundraising, and/or development is required.

  Development Officer II: Three years of fundraising or related experience is required.

  Development Officer III : Five years of fundraising or related experience is required. Experience in university fundraising and development, managing relationships, writing proposals, and donor database applications is required.

  Preferred Qualifications

  Development Officer I: Experience in a higher education setting is preferred.

  Development Officer II: Experience in university fundraising and development, managing relationships, writing proposals, and/or donor database applications is preferred. Experience in a higher education setting is preferred.

  Development Officer III : Master’s degree is preferred. Experience in a higher education setting is preferred.

  This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
