PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Formulate/Conceive designs and provides technical support for PECO transmission & Substation facilities. Create engineering drawings and documents required for the construction, installation, and maintenance of facilities which enable electricity to be distributed in a safe, reliable, and cost-effective manner. Performs duties and tasks independently without oversight or review.
Position may be required to work extended hours, including 24 x 7 coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
General Duties Accountable as designer to resolve all design issues related to projects.
Prioritize/Levelize work based on competing service dates and assignments.
Participates in interview process for filling designer position vacancies.
Provides guidance and mentoring for less experienced design personnel.
Assigns and reviews the work of other employees (drafters, designers).
Ensures that less experienced design personnel adhere to company safety regulations, safe work practices and work in accordance with established procedures.
As required, determines underground facility conflicts within the substation fence.
Design/Planning Prepare and assemble necessary documentation for complete design package for project. For example: design basic documents (single lines, schematics, arrangements, trench and grounding drawings, transmission lines plan and profile) and detailed drawings (wiring diagrams, foundation and structure drawings).
Prepares conceptual job cost estimates and design time estimates and initial drawings (single lines, arrangement drawings, proposed plans, etc.).
Utilizes appropriate construction standards and procedures.
Specifies and procures necessary materials for construction.
Reviews major equipment vendor single lines, schematics, and detailed construction drawings for incorporation into design.
Imports the electronic engineering CAD files to modify and implement design.
Utilizes Engineering Change (EC) module of Asset Suite 8 (AS8) for control and tracking of project.
Performs lighting study to determine adequate substation illumination.
Specifies scope of survey for new installations and determines locations for core bores.
Engineering Based on loosely defined conceptual designs (verbal discussion and/or one lines) develops and prepares preliminary alternative design options.
Employs applicable industry construction standards (IEEE, NESC, ASME) and utility best practice designs to prepare detailed project documentation for construction.
Performs site walkdowns to identify and resolve site specific safety, design, construction, operation and maintenance issues and problems.
Determines correct sizing of primary and secondary conductors. Calculations include voltage drop, cable pulling tensions, etc.
Maintains a field presence during construction and provides design assistance as required.
Develops and prepares design and construction standards.
Performs bus calculations to determine sizing based on projected fault duties.
Performs calculations and determines design for transformer oil containment system.
Determines design requirements for substation ancillary systems (e.g. remote control, metering, alarms, etc.).
Performs inspection of vendor assembled equipment prior to acceptance.
For new siting situations, determines suitability of property for usage.
Vendor / Contractor Consultant Provides technical support to Engineer of Choice (EOC) firms and other engineering and design contractors.
Interfaces with vendors for evaluation of latest technical developments applicable to substation and transmission design and construction.
Arranges for product demonstrations between vendor and PECO personnel for evaluation for usage on the PECO Energy system.
Please note that this is a union position and the successful candidate(s) will be hired as a Designer. The expectation is that the hire(s) will, in time, progress to the Senior Designer title.
Qualifications
Education Qualifications
Associates Degree in Engineering Technology or related technical field (typical).
Preferred Job Related/Experience Qualifications
2 years of experience in major design discipline, preferably in the physical realm (e.g. civil, structural, mechanical).
CAD experience ( e.g., Bentley MicroStation or AutoCAD): drafting, designing, modifying, reviewing or interpreting drawings
Qualifications
Specialized Skills, Knowledge, License Requirements/Registrations:
Required to maintain a valid drivers license with exclusive use of personal vehicle.
Required to adhere to PECO Energy Safety Standards.
Ability to manage large workloads unsupervised, ability to inspect and work around energized equipment, and ability to interpret PECO Energy power system diagram, circuit prints, etc.
Ability to understand PECO design and construction standards, policy and procedures.
Ability to understand PECO Energy Transmission and Distribution System configuration.
Ability to interpret NEC and OSHA requirements.
Knowledge of electric circuits and theory and knowledge of strength and materials.
Math skills including trigonometry.
Exhibit computer skills such as AS8, CAD, and Microsoft Office applications.
Responsible for maintaining/keeping current appropriate skill sets through continued education.
Demonstrated excellent communication and interaction skills.
Ability to create a detailed design/drawing from a verbal description.
Demonstrated problem solving and decision-making skills.
Ability to respond promptly to emergent system conditions and equipment failures.
