  Job Description

  Join the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center as the Data Visualization Specialist and become part of a team of experts redefining the measurement of mathematics, science, and reading achievement through TIMSS and PIRLS, which together represent the worldwide standard for assessment in these core subjects.

  Located at Boston College’s Lynch School of Education and Human Development, IEA’s TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center conducts regular international comparative assessments of student achievement in mathematics and science (TIMSS) and in reading (PIRLS) in more than 60 countries. TIMSS (the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) and PIRLS (the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) together comprise the core cycle of studies for IEA – the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement. Headquartered in Amsterdam and with a major data processing and research center in Hamburg, IEA has been conducting international comparative studies of student achievement since 1959.

  TIMSS and PIRLS enable participating countries to make evidence-based decisions for improving educational policy.

  The Data Visualization Specialist will create custom interactive tables and graphs that can be embedded in TIMSS & PIRLS Websites and be publicly viewed without proprietary software (like Tableau or Microsoft Power BI) that requires licenses for the end users, and will support the development of visualizations for a variety of work products developed by the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center.

  The candidate will be responsible for the development of attractive and compelling interactive visualizations that highlight key elements from the TIMSS & PIRLS data and will allow users to filter and view the results in various ways.

  Reporting to the Director, Graphic Design and Publications, the candidate will work directly with the Researchers, Assessment Developers, Reporting Staff, and the Front-end Web Developer in the Design department and also project partners, such as the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), and external vendors.

  The candidate should have a solid ability to develop and write code in the latest front-end technologies (HTML / CSS / JavaScript / JQuery /Bootstrap / WordPress—and also have experience with other tools such as / d3 / P5.js / React / Python / Github / Replit / Figma / GraphQL / NodeJS / R Shiny)

  The ability to customize WordPress with minimal use of plug-ins and also be able to effectively communicate with people possessing varying degrees of technical expertise is also a must.

  This role includes:

  Design, develop, and implement custom data visualizations and dynamic graphical representations —examples include interactive tables, charts, graphs, dashboards, and infographics (to be embedded in end-user web-based systems)

  Collaboration is critical. The candidate will work closely with staff in the TIMSS & PIRLS international Study Center on Web Presentation of the data and will occasionally assist in producing similar displays for assessment technologies

  Solid ability to develop and write code in the latest front-end technologies (HTML / CSS / JavaScript / JQuery / Bootstrap / WordPress—and also have experience with other tools such as / d3 / P5.js / React / Python / Github / Replit / Figma / GraphQL / NodeJS / R Shiny)

  Ability to customize WordPress with minimal use of plug-ins, and also assist in updating TIMSS & PIRLS Web site and other Online materials (such as partner portals, and video and demo pages)

  Ability to write W3C code and follow established Online best practices and accessibility guidelines

  Ability to develop in the latest front-end (HTML / CSS / JavaScript / JQuery / Bootstrap / d3 / WordPress) technologies and also be able to effectively communicate with people with varying degrees of technical expertise.

  Experience with tools for data analytics (SQL, Python or R a plus)

  Understanding of basic layout aesthetics, as well as experience with UI/UX design

  Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team aimed at presenting complex data, and translate it into interesting and useful visualizations

  Keen knowledge of SEO principles and best practices

  Familiarity with Adobe CC Photoshop & Illustrator, Sketch, and other editing and layout tools

  Experience with programming 2D animation is a plus

  Strong communication skills and the ability to understand and collaborate on ideas

  An extremely high attention to detail.

  Excellent analytical and multitasking skills

  BS/BA preferred

  Minimum 5 years of data visualization development and directly related experience— including collaborating with others and implementing production ready solutions under pressure in adherence to aggressive timelines.

  Candidates should include URLs and/or a web portfolio along with a resume.

  Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $78,950 to $98,700; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

  This position is grant funded.
