Job Description
RESEARCH DATA SPECIALIST, DATA MANAGEMENT AND BIOINFORMATICS TEAM, Biology-BioMicro Center, to join a facility providing data management for several major interinstitutional projects ranging from cancer research to infectious disease to environmental remediation. In each project, the BioMicro Center (https://openwetware.org/wiki/BioMicroCenter) serves as a host and integrator of large, multidimensional datasets with the goal of improving findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability of data to enable improved reproducibility and increase discovery using machine learning-based approaches. Responsibilities include providing administrative and analytic support for building and maintaining a novel data management platform supporting a broad spectrum of biological and clinical methodologies; coordinating multiple research groups across and outside of MIT; developing new systems and processes for data collection as needed; developing and maintaining databases; providing researcher training; handling critical research data; and interacting with a broad variety of MIT and non-MIT research scientists. Performing additional bioinformatics tasks utilizing the data are possible as well.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree in biological or computer science or engineering or related field; programming experience; at least one year of post-degree experience with data-intensive biological data; ability to prioritize a variety of tasks and work both collaboratively and independently; excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; self-motivation and flexibility when working in a rapidly evolving environment; and attention to detail. PREFERRED: exposure to a variety of clinical research principles, study designs, biological methods, assays, and data, either in laboratory or classroom settings; master's degree or direct experience integrating biological data and computational architectures (e.g., bioinformatics); experience with pipelining software (e.g., Nextflow) ability to learn scientific principles and concepts; experience with web development tools and database servers (e.g., SQL); and UX design experience.
