The Office of New Americans and Immigrant Communities reaches out to Houston’s diverse community of immigrants, ex-patriates and refugees to facilitate their successful civic, economic and cultural integration as members of our community. By partnering with stakeholders and community-based organizations to offer programs, services, and signature events, the Office of New Americans seeks to build the capacity of Houston to welcome and integrate its diverse citizenry.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Customer Service Representative should possess a high degree of initiative, excellent communication and writing skill, exceptional attention to detail, well-developed critical thinking skills, and proven analytical abilities. The Customer Service Representative I will act as a liaison on behalf of the Director. The Customer Service Representative I should be a creative problem solver who is highly organized and able to deliver accurate results in a dynamic environment.
General Responsibilities:
Achieves operational objectives by contributing information and recommendations to strategic plans and reviews.
Assists the director in the preparation and support of office initiatives.
Proactively resolves problems.
Enhances division reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments actions.
Represent the office at city and/or community meetings, including the City’s language access program and the Mayor’s Advisory Council of New Americans.
Assists in daily operations of the Office of New Americans.
Performs clerical duties as required such as answer telephone, correspondence, data entry, copying documents, replying to emails, etc.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position is physically comfortable; Requires stooping or bending. Occasional lifting, such as three or four reams of paper or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Requires a high school diploma or a GED.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Three (3) years of administrative or customer service related experience are required.
Associate's degree may be substituted for up to two (2) years of experience.
Bachelor's degree may be substituted for up to four (4) years of experience.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
None
PREFERENCES
Must have good oral and written communication skills as well as strong PC (Windows, Microsoft Office/Outlook) skills. Excellent verbal and written communications skills are preferred. Extensive community relations experience and knowledge of city services, community/social services are preferred.
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

Grants & Special fund positions are dependent upon continued available funds. If funding is no longer available, employee may be laid off or transferred. Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
