Position Summary
Manages, directs and coordinates financial, personnel, and operational retail activities including cash, food sales, clothing, novelties, grab and go service models with hot food, grocery, and other related services of the Culinary Services department. Oversees day to day operations of multiple retail outlets and service models; Interviews, selects, trains, schedules, evaluates and reviews the performance of support staff; plans, establishes, updates and implements the objectives and operational policies and procedures to comply with unit, division and university guidelines; manages the personnel activities of the operation and coordinates the work efforts of staff to meet unit and departmental expectations; plans, establishes and updates operational policies and procedures to comply with unit, division and university guidelines; develops forecasts for multiple units and maintains fiscal responsibility for accounts and prepares periodic financial reports; monitors safety, security and sanitation activities to comply with university requirements and state and federal laws; manages and negotiates service contracts and agreements for units; manages cash handling and cash systems; develops standards for retail services and evaluates new products and industry trends in order to improve operations.
Oversees the day to day operations of up to 13 retail outlets, ranging from clothing, convenience items, grab and go hot food items, and grocery; Work within multiple settings, including academic areas, residential buildings, and hotel; Manages a budget of over $12M and oversees a team of over 200 students, 20 unionized full time employees, and 5 support staff; Strategically purchases for retail food and drink items to fit within the Culinary Services dining plan; Uses innovation and strategic planning to stay current with trends, operate stores efficiently and to be financially secure, to enhance the food availability across campus, and to improve the customer experience
All positions in SLE are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approvedremote work agreementto work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in hospitality business or business administration; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in management, retail, and/or cash food operations and overseeing multiple operation sites; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Experience of supervising operations of 5+ locations at once
Experience with managerial coaching and development of staff
Excellent written and verbal communications skills
Proficient in time management and making decisions under high stress environments
