JOB REQUIREMENTS: Job Summary Performs work involving the care, safety,custody and detention of adults and juveniles in the Brown County Jailand if qualified, Juvenile Detention Center; provides a positiverehabilitative influence to all inmates; ensures inmate compliance withJail rules and officer compliance with all applicable state and federallaws; and acts within the parameters of the Brown County Jail andJuvenile Detention Center policies and procedures. Guaranteed pay raiseswithin the first seven years of employment. Essential Duties Provideeffective and efficient inmate care during assigned shift and podlocation. Respond to and intervene as necessary to a variety ofemergencies within the facility, such as officer distress, inmatemedical issues or disturbances. If justified, use proper force tocontrol inmates that are not compliant with staff orders. Usecommunication and de-escalation techniques when appropriate to helpprevent disturbances, damage to the facility and assaults. Effectivelyperform searches on individuals, cells and areas to prevent theintroduction of contraband (weapons, drugs, etc.) into the facility.Gather evidence; take crime scene photos, record statements of victimsand witnesses in order to build criminal cases on incidents within thefacility. Perform rescue operations in the case of a fire emergency.These duties would include the following: donning SCBA; conductingsearches in a smoke/fire filled environment to remove inmates from thearea of danger and fire suppression with either extinguishers or hoses.ADDITIONAL DUTY REQUIREMENTS: Obtain information from the public andprisoners for completion of forms, documents and records associated withthe booking process. Collect personal property including money; issuesreceipts and accounts for monies; itemizes and stores until inmate isreleased. Perform accurate data input for the documentation of recordswithin the jail. Review and enter court documentation into the system toensure accurate information. Ability to follow up with the Courts /Court Officers on issues found in the court documentation. Answerinquiries regarding departmental policies or regulations or referinquiries to the proper department or official. Obtain photos andfingerprints of incarcerated persons as directed by statutoryrequirements. Maintain security and discipline in the Jail and JuvenileDetention Center. Supervise the delivery of meals and issues cleaningmaterials and other supplies when necessary. Maintain surveillance ofall inmates within the Jail and Juvenile Detention Center. Administerfirst aid and secure medical assistance for inmates when required.Assign, supervise and inspect work of adult and juvenile inmates workingwithin the facility and on outside duties. Investigate illegal orcriminal activities within the Jail and Juvenile Detention Center.Supervise movement of inmates. Distribute inmate medication and keepaccurate records of such disbursements pursuant to the Jail Policy andProcedure Manual. Conduct searches and daily inspections of livingquarters. Protect adult and juvenile inmates from peer intimidation andphysical confrontations. Conduct routine inspection and maintenance ofJail equipment. Collect DNA samples from inmates as assigned. Performall other duties as directed by competent authority. ***** OTHEREXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Must be at least 18 years old Knowledgeof agency department policies and procedures. Knowledge of federal andstate laws which apply to jails and secure detention facilities and ofrelated care, treatment and security programs. Knowledge of techniquesand positions of inmate control and precautionary measures used inescorting and supervising inmate work details. Knowledge of rules andregulations governing the secure detention facility including WisconsinDepartment of Corrections Administrative Codes 350, 348 and 346. Ability to understand inmate behavior, interpersonal relations and socialinteractions. Knowledge of methods and practices of jail security.Ability to defend themselves and others from physical assault. Abilityto physically control the behavior of combative / assaultive inmates.Ability to recognize dangerous behaviors prior to a physical assault.Ability to work in confined spaces. Ability to quickly remove an inmatefrom a dangerous situation and in case of fire or other emergency,supervise the immediate evacuation of inmates. Ability to serve as apositive role model for inmates and provide effective direction andsupervision. Ability to establish and maintain effective customerservice relationships with staff and the public. Ability to adapt to thechanging procedures as they apply to the different sections anddifferent classifications of inmates within the jail.
