Summary
The Controller is responsible for managing the general accounting activities of the business and compiling and analyzing data to provide management with accurate financial analysis to be utilized in decision-making and performance monitoring. This position plays a key role in the establishment of, and adherence to, accounting policies and procedures as well as analytic support for financial reporting. This individual will effectively maintain and control the general ledger accounts and business transactions of the organization, applying the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
The Controller reports to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and has direct oversight of the Finance and Accounting team members. As a visible leader within CSS Farms, this individual will embody our CSS Farms core values, and prioritize positive leadership to their direct team and the farms we support. This position will reside in our Shared Services office in Kearney, Nebraska.
Responsibilities
The essential duties include managing the accounting activities of the business, assisting management with development of tools and reports, process documentation and ad-hoc analysis. This individual will also provide objective insights, timely reporting, effective analysis and overall finance support to ensure productive management reviews, sound financially-based decisions and proactive responses to identify and mitigate risk.
Other key responsibilities include:
Daily leadership and management of the Finance and Accounting team members, including financial reporting, accounts receivable (A/R) and accounts payable (A/P); with additional cross-functional partnership with other Shared Services team and support to our 15 nationwide farms
Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly and year-end financial reports including analysis and evaluation of the data
Manage the month-end close process, and ensure timely execution of month-end close
Recommend and administer implementation of changes to accounting policies, procedures and reports in an ongoing effort to continuously improve the quality of information and services provided
Evaluate financial implications of specific business decisions/opportunities and advise management accordingly to ensure achievement of targeted financial performance
Provide analytical support on cross-functional projects as requested
Gather, compile, analyze, prepare and summarize data for complex financial projects/subjects such as planning, formulating and conducting financial studies to define performance plans for short and long-range business goals
Evaluate financial implications of specific business decisions and opportunities and advise management accordingly to ensure targeted financial performance achievement
Exercise judgment to determine appropriate course of action and prepare business recommendation based on sound financial analysis
Manage the financial planning, budgeting and fo ecasting processes
Provide concise and effective communication of financial results in a timely manner
Lead preparation of GAAP internal financial statements by gathering and analyzing information from the general ledger system and from departments
Review and/or prepare general ledger entries and review and/or prepare account reconciliations by maintaining accurate records and files
Manage year-end audit requested data and provide any interface as needed
Review and/or prepare various tax and corporate reports on a timely basis, as needed
Lead corporate tax efforts with external tax firms
Research GAAP related issues and make recommendations, as needed
Manage the businesses insurance program
Other duties as assigned.
Required Position Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance
At least 7 years cumulative relevant experience (accounting operations and/or audit)
Strong financial acumen with demonstrated analytical ability accompanied by knowledge of GAAP and corporate finance principles - understanding of PandL, balance sheet, and cash flow dynamics
Ability to accumulate, organize and manipulate quantitative data to identify and explain trends, problems and their causes. Compare, contrast and combine information to determine underlying issues.
A proficient level of professional skill and/or knowledge in accounting, and adept at staying current with developments and trends. Knowledge and ability to use applicable information technology and systems to meet work needs
Proficient skill with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Word)
Ability to present information in a competent, efficient manner that resonates with team members at various levels across the company
Must be able to manage many projects simultaneously and prioritize workload appropriately using strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to adapt quickly to new systems and a changing business environment
Ability to maintain confidential information
Demonstrated strong work-ethic, outstanding leadership ability and exceptional interpersonal skills
Ability to comprehend, read, write and communicate proficiently in English
Preferred Position Qualifications
CPA certification strongly preferred
CMA Certification and/or advanced degree strongly preferred
