We offer internships for students interested in learning more about environmental positions at the state level while gaining meaningful professional experiences. The intern will work directly with staff and executives on key environmental issues in a variety of capacities throughout the department.
WHAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE:
The chosen intern will:
Conduct research and review of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) storage structures in Michigan and other states.
Review of state specific Natural Resource Conservation Service (NCRS) Standards, CAFO permits as well as interaction with our and other state employees and staff.
Leverage research information to identify and document if additional specific storage structure design components could protect from waste infiltrating to groundwater and waste storage structure overflows.
Compare and contrast state and NRCS standards and summarize information (including references) within a word document.
Review literature and websites to document information on the physical and chemical characteristics of anerobic digestate.
Summarize information (including references) in narrative and table format.
Compare Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) and water quality criteria.
Gain knowledge in some of the key areas of environmental work that EGLE performs daily.
This internship will be fully remote; however student will be required to pick up State issued laptop and receive technology access instruction in person at a physical EGLE District Office Location
Interns are expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week and can work up to 40 hours per week. Days and times of work will be coordinated around the student’s academic schedule and the needs of the project outcomes
Students seeking academic credit for this internship experience must work with their academic institution and the internship supervisor to coordinate any required paperwork or project tracking requirements.

Required Education and Experience
Education
Current enrollment in a post-secondary education institution at a Junior, Senior or Graduate student level by fall of 2024
Actively pursuing a Bachelors degree in one of the following:
Environmental science, animal science, agricultural science, soil science, engineering or any of the physical sciences would be considered.
Experience
Past experience accessing literature articles could be beneficial. Scientific background or interest is preferred
