The Communications Specialist is responsible for strengthening the College of Engineering’s internal and external communications strategies through engaging content on a variety of platforms. The Communications Specialist is responsible for supporting a range of communications activities , including writing, and editing a variety of promotional materials, such as articles, social media posts, marketing, and materials.
The Communications Specialist is also responsible for managing, updating, and maintaining the College’s website; creating and designing newsletters, invitations, banners, brochures, and other promotional; measuring the impact of the College’s website and social media; and, when necessary, assisting at special events.
Essential/Primary Duties:
Write articles and solicit stories showcasing the College of Engineering’s faculty, staff, students’ awards, and accolades.
Write, edit, and compile content for social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, X, etc.)
Design/create digital and physical marketing materials including newsletters, brochures, flyers, invites, presentations, etc.
Attend events, lectures, workshops, and conferences to conduct interviews and capture photos and videos.
Oversee the College’s website (using Cascade CMS), make updates, and ensure copy, photos and videos are up-to-date and accurate.
Safeguard and catalog the College’s assets, including photos, audio, logos, designs, displays, and reports.
Develop and maintain relationships across the College of Engineering and Central Communications to help execute a clear and consistent communication strategy, improve transparency, and ensure alignment in all communications and marketing efforts.
Analyze communication trends, identify areas of opportunity, and make recommendations for improving departmental operations.
Additional duties may be assigned.
Manual Skills – Proficiency with Word and MS Office required.
Communication Skills – Strong spoken, written and research skills; proficient with Adobe Creative Suite programs.
Hours of Work – 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. M-F and must be able to work evenings and weekends to support event functions, as needed.
CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field in Communications, English, Public Relations, Marketing, English, or some related field with some basic web programming.
Certification and Licensing:

Experience:
Minimum 2 years of relevant experience
At least one year of experience in communications preferably in the non-profit or education sector
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure.
Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
Ability to understand and follow instructions.
Ability to manage multiple projects, establish workload priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, complex environment with frequently changing priorities; and ability to manage multiple projects at a time and meet deadlines is crucial
Capability of self-starting and ability to prioritize duties with a focus on attention to detail; ability to work independently, as well as in a team setting and think collaboratively, strategically and creatively
Department Specific Functions
Assists with the administration of the assigned department’s communication budget.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
