*CNC Machinist*
Position Summary
Sets up and operates conventional, special-purpose, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts, and fits and assembles machined parts into complete units, applying knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, maintainability of materials, and layout techniques.
Essential Job Functions
*ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES*• Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.• Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines, such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.• Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.• Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.• Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications, using precision measuring instruments.• Sets up and operates machine on trial run, as required, to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.• Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly, using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools, and power tools.• Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly, using measuring instruments, such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks.• May install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and test operation of unit toensure functionality and performance.• May develop specifications from general description and draw sketch of part or product to be fabricated.• Confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.• Communicates with co-workers and supervisor to receive instructions and coordinate activities.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Between 4 and 10 years of trade school, vocational education, work experience, and/or apprenticeship
VISUAL ACUITYNear acuity and accommodation are required for reading machine dial gauges, blueprints and precision-measuring instruments used in the inspection of parts.
HEARING ABILITYAbility to monitor machine sounds to identify and diagnose changes in order to take appropriate action.
WORKING CONDITIONSThe employee is subject to high noise levels from operating machines, physical hazards from moving equipment and machine parts, breathing fumes, dust and mist and skin exposure to oils and cutting fluid.The employee is required to: stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to floor. Exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or exert 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
