[POSITION SUMMARYJoin the City of Watertowns Public Works Department as a Civil Engineering/Surveying Intern and participate in a 10-15 week hands on internship. This is a temporary position that will work between 40-50 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with the core hours being 8:00am to 5:00pm CST. The pay for this position will be $21.50-$24.00 per hour, depending upon previous experience and training. This is a great opportunity for someone who has a broad interest in Municipal Government and/or Civil Engineering, surveying, or construction management and will be working in a team environment under the supervision of the Assistant City Engineer.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEnrolled in college/university with sophomore standing or above and preferably in a civil engineering or related program. Maintain detailed records and reports.Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.Establish effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public.Handle multiple requests for assistance with other staff and follow directions.Ability to follow safe working practices by wearing appropriate protective clothing, foot wear and headwear; using safety equipment properly, and follow good housekeeping and standard safety procedures.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CIVIL ENGINEERING/SURVEYING INTERN:
Assist in the conception, design, and construction management of street, sidewalk and sewer improvements;
Assists with current projects by preparing maps and researching, performing inspections, surveying, and staking.
Utilize electronic equipment to gather survey data for projects, download to computer, and upload into drafting software;
Evaluates and inspects private and public works projects.
Develops maps, project plans, and cost estimates.
Utilize AutoCAD and GIS software to produce illustrations of engineering issues and/or solutions;
Prepare and/or deliver written communications regarding City projects;
Document public and private development projects with photographs and daily logs;
Provides updates and issues to engineering staff.
Inspects grading operations to ensure compliance with and enforces the Storm Water Management program.
Inspects sidewalks for areas in need of replacement
