The Civil Engineer II position is the full journey level position withinthe Civil Engineer series. This position is distinguished from the CivilEngineer I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned.Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction orassistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of theoperating procedures and policies of the Department. This position isnormally filled by advancement from the Civil Engineer I level, or whenfilled from the outside and have prior experience. The Civil Engineer IIperforms program management assignments demanding considerable knowledgeof various aspects of engineering, related computer software, and surveyinstruments. Projects include but are not limited to land development,planning, design standards and regulations, streets and streetimprovements, traffic, storm drainage facilities, sanitary sewerfacilities, municipal facilities, bridges, retaining walls, grading anddrainage, review and processing of private development plans anddevelopment actions, and construction and maintenance.
The Civil Engineer II performs complex engineering tasks independent ofclose guidance, takes the role of project engineer for largemultifaceted capital improvements from planning, through design,bidding, and construction phases. The Civil Engineer II reviews andexamines construction drawings, specifications, and shop drawingsprepared by outside consultants, determines feasibility, and preparesvarious reports pertaining to design of City infrastructure. Theposition is also responsible for assisting contractors, developers,builders, other departments, and other citizens needing assistance onprojects, assigns tasks to engineering technicians and oversees at ageneral level the work of contractors on large construction jobs.
