Springer Nature, the publisher ofNature, is looking to recruit a Chief Editor forNature Astronomy.This job is offered on a full-time, permanent basis and is based in either our Berlin or New York offices (Hybrid working). Internal applicants from other journals hub locations may also apply.
Nature Astronomy () is a prestigious journal that welcomes research across astronomy, astrophysics and planetary science, with the aim of fostering closer interaction between the researchers in each of these areas. In addition to publishing original research, Nature Astronomypublishes Comments, Reviews, News and Views, Features and Correspondence from across all disciplines concerned with astronomy, as well as from a full range of voices.
The Chief Editor will be expected to ensure that the journal continues to meet the professional needs and interests of its authors and readers and will be responsible for leading the dedicated editorial team. For this exciting opportunity, the ideal candidate will have a broad knowledge of the topics covered by Nature Astronomy; excellent literary and verbal communication skills; a commitment to the communication of scientific ideas; outstanding leadership qualities; commercial awareness and a positive attitude to change.
Applicants must have a PhD, and preferably postdoctoral experience, with a strong track record in research relevant to the fields covered in the journal. Previous editorial and/or managerial experience is an additional advantage.
The successful applicant will lead an editorial team and work closely with them on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection, commissioning and editing content, and writing for the journal. A key aspect of the job is liaising with the scientific community through laboratory visits and international conferences - willingness to travel is essential.
Working within a dynamic editorial and publishing environment that also includesNature, Nature Physics, Nature Photonics and Nature Geoscience among others, this demanding and stimulating role calls for a keen interest in the practice and communication of science. The successful candidate will be dynamic and have excellent interpersonal skills. Broad scientific knowledge and training, excellent literary skills and the ability to absorb new areas of research are prerequisites.
