  Job Summary

  Please Note: This position is posted in a range and level will be determined by education and experience.

  Responsible for performing technical and specialized work in conjunction with chemical analyses.

  Job Description

  Obtain and prepare in-plant and environmental samples, and operate sampling equipment, as directed.

  Perform tests requiring the use of analytical equipment, common chemical materials, including assisting in special analysis and tests necessary to regulate proper chemical treatment of systems.

  Prepare reagents, standards, and other chemicals to specific concentrations for use in sample analyses and system chemical additions.

  Make required equipment checks.

  Assist in performing tests and preparing related reports, graphs and curves.

  Record and present data from laboratory analyses calibration processes and in-plant / environmental surveys in proper written format and enter data into a computer database.

  Review, and / or record readings on controlling, indicating, and recording devices and compare to established standards and specifications.

  Recommend corrective actions and adjustments to system chemistry based on analysis results.

  MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR CHEM TECH, JR:

  EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  Associate degree in Chemistry or related field

  Or equivalent education or experience.

  MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR CHEM TECH (MID- LEVEL):

  EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  Associate degree in Chemistry or related field

  Or equivalent education or experience.

  WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  2 years' experience, with a minimum of 2 years in the respective specialty, and 1 year of related technical training.

  Experience is generally gained through a progression that includes two years as Junior Chemical Technician.

  OTHER REQUIREMENTS (APPLIES TO JUNIOR & MID-LEVEL):

  Successful completion of the Plant Technician Selection System (TECH) test is required for this position. A review of Employment Testing Information, Test-Taking tips, and the TECH Practice Test may be helpful. A link to these materials may be found at AEP.com/Careers by selecting Employment testing. A physical abilities assessment is also required for this position.

  Plan and complete scheduled activities on time.

  Assist other personnel in completing their activities and assist in the training of other employees.

  Support and participate in the Emergency Plan Organization, HAZMAT response organization, and Corrective Action Program activities as assigned, and in accordance with procedures and policies applicable for the assigned role.

  Perform all duties, and work with other employees in a safe manner, in compliance with appropriate company safety policies and rules.

  Assume responsibility for continuously upgrading knowledge and skill.

  Physical Demands:

  It is understood that in the performance of most nuclear generating plant duties there will be associated radiation exposure within the limits prescribed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

  Work location will include a plant environment which may include exposure to heat, cold, and noise.

  Work location will include outdoors, and therefore subject to weather conditions. Education and experience / licensing and certification requirements of this position conform to ANSI N18.1 – 1971 and ANSI/ANS-3.1-1993.

  MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR CHEM TECH, SR:

  Associate degree in Chemistry or related field

  Or equivalent education or experience.

  An associate degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent education and/or experience would be desirable.

  WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  Minimum 2 years' experience as Chemistry Instrumentation Technician at Cook Plant.

  Minimum total amount of direct and related work experience, 5 years.

  OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  Physical demand level is Sedentary.

  Monitor trends of plant parameters and make recommendations of corrective actions to supervision.

  Report irregularities and abnormal conditions.

  Maintain equipment, tools, and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.

  Clean equipment, tools, and work areas after job completion.

  Lead and direct the work of other technicians when requested and assist in the proper training of other employees in the thorough safe and timely completion of tasks.

  Support and participate in the Emergency Plan Organization, HAZMAT response organization, and Corrective Action Program activities as assigned, and in accordance with procedures and policies applicable for the assigned role.

  Performance of duties may involve work in hazardous areas and possible radiation exposure within the limits prescribed by the NRC.

  Must establish & maintain a permanent residence with a 45-minute safe drive time to the D.C. Cook Nuclear Plant.
