This is an advanced Journeyman position which performs carpentry work, flooring, glass work, door/window work and as required lock work regardless of the nature or complexity of the work. In addition, performs Lead worker duties over assigned carpenter and maintenance worker employees and contractors. This job also may require the understanding and safe operation of heavy equipment.
Job Duties:
40%- This position requires working independently with minimal supervision to investigate and respond to all carpentry emergency situations and make necessary repairs to windows, doors, stairs, specialty doors, roll up and rolling walls, tool boxes, podiums and concrete forms. Assesses the situation and initiates work orders to the proper trades personnel if not carpentry related. Analyzes emergency and routine situations to determine tools and materials necessary to complete assignments.
25%- Performs carpentry repairs, remodeling, maintenance, construction, alterations on auxiliary and academic facilities both in emergency and routine situations. Produces molding and other fine items of both wood and artificial material by operating all types of equipment associated with the carpentry trade; rip saws cut off saws, plainers, drill presses, jointer, jig saws, grinders, shapers, mortising, tenoning, and bore machines. Sands and finishes furniture, cabinets, finished articles of wood and artificial materials.
20%- Fits, cuts and fastens all types of wall coverings such as plywood, paneling, sheet rock, and FRP panels, etc. Repairs and installs support grids, drop ceilings, baseboards, and floor tiles. Maintains, repairs and installs door closures, panic devices, door locks, and door mullions. Performs all duties assigned to the Journeyman carpentry level.
5%- Performs other work as required; including but not limited to providing supervisory assistance to one or more carpenters. Directs and trains assigned carpenter apprentices and helpers. Assumes supervisory responsibilities in the absence or carpenter supervisor.
5%- Assesses all emergency situations and immediately implements necessary work to eliminate all dangerous/hazardous situations. Maintains records of work assignments completed each day. Initiates requisition orders and necessary paperwork to insure that the proper materials are on hand.
5%- Operates heavy equipment & machinery (such as large man-lifts, scissor-lifts, fork-lifts, & large trucks with trailers).
Minimum Qualifications:
Three years of experience in the carpentry trade.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Training in the carpentry trade will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience on a month for month basis.
Special or Physical Qualifications:
Due to the nature of this position and/or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67. In accordance with PS-18 this position maybe required to report to or stay on campus in the event of emergency or closure. Must be able to lift 50 lbs, be capable of stooping, kneeling, or crouching; able to reach and/or climb a ladder; climb stairs, or bend their back. Due to the position's physical requirements, a pre-employment physical examination will be required per FASOP: HR-04.
