DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD seeks a Carpenter to join its Facilities Management & Development Team.
The potential candidate will play a role in the following duties:
Coordinate and perform general carpentry activities such as the design, construction, installation, repair and renovation of furnishings, cabinetry, doors, windows, containers, crates, flooring, building additions, panels, and glass.
Operate equipment such as hammers, saws, drills, and other tools as required for this position.
Review and implement work orders.
Inspect work sites to determine materials, equipment and estimated costs for projects.
Measure and calculate projects to ensure accuracy of the design. Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
This position is designated among essential personnel under the City's Emergency Management Policy.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. There are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions. The position may involve routine exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Specialized training in principles, procedures, practices, routines or techniques in a specific area or trade which might normally be acquired through up to 18 months of education or training beyond the high school level. Vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment may be required.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two years of experience in carpentry are required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
A valid driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).
PREFERENCES
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
