POSITION DESCRIPTION: BUSINESS CONTROLLER
JOB SUMMARY:
Provide leadership and coordination of financial process improvement in particular with reporting and grant management. Ensure monthly close is accurate and timely coordinating primarily with Manager of Accounting and Financial Controller.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
1. Planning, directing, and coordinating all grant accounting and reporting with support from the grants coordinator and a second accounting position.
2. Managing the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of consolidated business results.
Monitor and analyze monthly operating results against budget.4. Coordinating and preparing internal and external financial statements.
5. Coordinating activities of external auditors and 990 tax preparation.
6. Meet with Senior Leadership regularly providing management with information vital to the decision-making process.
7. Managing the budget process and forecasting process.
8. Assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement, and implementing new processes.
9. Liaise with funders/grantor and serve as the leader with grant kick-off meetings.
10. Manager in particular the ENPWDC grant and improve management of payroll and operational reporting.
11. Evaluating accounting and internal control systems.
12. Evaluating the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting database, as needed.
13. Developing and monitoring business performance metrics.
14. Grant compliance and financial reporting.
15. Hiring, training, and retaining skilled accounting staff.
16. Excellent written and verbal skills
17. Experience with training and supervision of staff
QUALIFICATIONS:
Skills and Experience
Solid knowledge of accounting principles and practices as demonstrated by holding active CPA license.Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), as well as Governmental Accounting Standards (GAS) and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) pronouncements.Up to date on nonprofit expertise regarding audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.Knowledge of financial compliance and risk management including but not limited to statutory and regulatory requirements for nonprofit organizations.Expert proficiency in accounting software general ledger systems, Abila MIP preferred, Microsoft Excel and other Office products required. Some experience with payroll systems (e.g., Paylocity) is a plus.Communication skills capable of presenting accounting and financial requirements to program personnel.Excellent organization, time management, and follow-up skills; ability to prioritize and demonstrate an appropriate sense of urgency.History of successfully implementing/integrating systems, policies, and protocolsDemonstrated ability to work and lead project teams.Minimum Requirements:
BA/BS degree in accounting. CPA preferred.Public accounting experience is required.Minimum of 10 years of experience with at least 5 years in a management role.Non-profit sector experience preferred.Experience in real estate financing for schools.Superior detail orientation balanced with the ability to see the "big picture".Comfortable working in a collaborative team environment.Proven track record of success managing and coaching othersWORK ENVIRONMENT:
