Burn Crew Members will be a part of The Nature Conservancy's North America Fire program. They will report to the Director of Prescribed Fire Training and work under the supervision of Prescribed Fire Module Leaders and local TNC and/or USDA Forest Service fire management staff.
Burn Crew Members will have the opportunity to participate in several prescribed fire assignments on lands managed by The Nature Conservancy, the USDA Forest Service, and other local, state, federal, NGO, university, and Tribal partners between January and June 2024. Locations of assignments include (but are not limited to) California, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. In most cases, the minimum assignment length will be two weeks. Applicants who are available to work 5-6 assignments between January and June 2024 may receive priority during the selection process. Burn Crew Members will represent the North America Fire program in the places they work. Their attitude, preparedness, and willingness to learn will be important as they conduct prescribed burns, prepare fire lines, maintain equipment, conduct post-burn monitoring, and complete other land management duties. They will work independently and in teams, lead others, follow direction from supervisors, teach courses, and mentor others, while also advancing their own training and qualifications. They will be expected to serve in roles commensurate with their qualifications and experience.
This is a part-time, seasonal, hourly position and overtime applies after the first 40 hours each week. Hourly compensation will range from $21.00 to $25.00 per hour. Burn Crew Members who are qualified at the Firefighter Type Two (FFT2) level will earn between $21.00 and $22.00 per hour. Burn Crew Members who have one or more additional qualifications including Firefighter Type One (FFT1), Intermediate Faller (FAL2), Fire Effects Monitor (FEMO), and/or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) will earn between $24.00 and $25.00 per hour.
Travel expenses, meals, and lodging will be covered when traveling for assignments. Approved purchases of required equipment will be partially or fully reimbursed.
Burn Crew Members will be expected to:
Perform tasks under the supervision of the Prescribed Fire Module Leader and in coordination with local TNC and/or USDA Forest Service fire management staff.Function as a contributing member of a mixed-gender, cross-generational team with a range of skills and experience.Follow established safe work practices.Be able to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.Assist with all aspects of prescribed burning.Operate ATVs, UTVs, tractors, chain saws, and leaf blowers, and tow trailers.Maintain assigned equipment.Maintain accurate records of work time, expenses, etc. and submit reports in a timely manner.Become competent with mobile mapping and data collection such as Collector for ArcGIS and Avenza Maps.Demonstrate a commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.This description is not designed to be a complete list of all duties and responsibilities required for this job.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
High school diploma and 6 months of related experience.Must be qualified as a Firefighter Type Two (FFT2), including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wild Land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2. The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $21-$25 per hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
