GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking two Black Bear Technicians to conduct fieldwork to assist in estimating black bear density and abundance in western Wyoming from June 1, 2024, through August 31, 2024. This position will be based out of Lander and fieldwork in Greys River, Wyoming Range

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.
Inventory and monitor large carnivore populations, focused on noninvasive DNA hair snare techniques to collect genetic samples on black bears in remote mountainous terrain.
Capturing and handling of large carnivores in Wyoming primarily focused on black bears. Using controlled drugs, firearms, and explosives.
Collecting data and keeping records.
Assistance with data collection and report writing.
Working closely with other work units and regional personnel within the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and other states, federal, and tribal partners.
Qualifications
PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in wildlife management, range management, biology, zoology, ichthyology, or closely related field, PLUS experience in wildlife capture and handling techniques.
**Must have a valid driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE:
Ability to work long and irregular hours under adverse conditions in a remote setting.
Knowledge of navigation and first aid in the backcountry.
Ability to implement and adhere to established data collection protocols.
Knowledge and ability in handheld GPS units, firearms, dangerous chemicals, controlled pharmaceuticals, trapping equipment, ATVs, horses, 4-wheel drive vehicles, radio equipment, radio telemetry, and power equipment and tools.
Requires work with dangerous animals in remote settings.
Requires independent decision-making ability and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Requires computer and data analysis skills.
Knowledge of the ecology of large carnivores and other wild animals.

Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Hiking long distances through rugged and challenging terrain with a heavy pack. Spending days at a time living in remote areas.
Operating 4-wheel drive vehicles, snowmobiles, ATVs, hauling trailers, riding and packing horses for backcountry work, and flying in fixed-wing and helicopters in mountain conditions.
Working in inclement and severe weather conditions. Potentially on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Working alone in remote, backcountry locations.
The position will require heavy lifting and excellent physical condition.
