Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Program within the College of Liberal Arts Undergraduate Education, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Campus, encourages applications for an Associate Director for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in the MLK Program. The MLK Program is an opt-in academic advising and student support services unit available to any CLA student who appreciates an environment that embraces and fosters civil rights, social justice and pluralism. This role supervises 6 professional academic advisors, provides culturally attentive, diversity, inclusion, equity, racial equity, and social justice academic advising, teaches and facilitates a First-Year Experience student-facing course. This position works closely with the CLA Office of Student Experience to provide training for CLA Team Leaders and Section Leaders, and works closely with the director on planning, coordinating, and delivering curricular and cocurricular programming. Additionally, this role consults with college and campus entities to address inequities, participates on campus and community committees, and promotes racial equity practices across campus. Within this context, the MLK Program provides high-impact community-building and educational programs to nurture future leaders grounded in the core concepts of intersectional identity development, diversity education, equity, racial equity, and social justice. Key Responsibilities 60% Manage Daily Operations Foster a workplace climate that is encouraging of employees and respectful of differences, as well as to cultivate a learning environment for students that encourages personal development, self-reflection, and academic success. Supervise four or more professional MLK Academic Advisors and co-supervise executive administrative specialist, and write annual performance reviews for all staff supervised. Lead and coordinate with other MLK advisers on-boarding process and procedures for new incoming MLK advisors and staff. Work closely with the director in monitoring and tracking operational budgets and in writing annual reports for CLA-UGE MLK program. Lead the MLK student opt-in process in collaboration with CLA-UGE student support services. Generate student outreach strategies to foster student retention and degree completion Conduct analytic review of student records to certify students' academic standing in relation to academic probation, suspension, and degree completion. Assist in leading the development of unit goals and contribute to the overall strategic planning process. 20% Academic Advising Manage an academic advising caseload of 50-60 students for culturally-attentive, diversity, equity and social justice advising. Proactively advise all assigned students and track students' progress, with the goals of retention and progression toward program completion. Support advising staff during peak advising periods to ensure a high-quality, consistent, and accurate advising culture that is aligned with the university's mission to promote student success. Develop and assess the procedures, mechanisms, and strategies for the college's advising component of student engagement Provide consistent and accurate advising information to students through APLUS as well as across departments to ensure that all disseminated information is consistently updated. Analyze and maintain student overview data, identifying retention and persistence patterns and other relevant information to provide for data-informed decisions regarding academic advising, its processes, and its outcomes. 10% Teaching Instruct and facilitate a section of 28-30 students for the MLK 1001 & 1002 First Year Experience student-facing course specifically designed for incoming First Year Students during the Fall & Spring semester. Provide cons ltation to the MLK Curriculum Coordinators in the on-going design of MLK 1001 & 1002 5% Professional Development and Training Attend professional development and training developed by CLA-UGE and attend training and/or professional development each year related to the mission and demographics of the MLK Program. Assist with the creation of UGE DEI and Social Justice reflection questions for assigned modules. Assist with creating evaluations for UGE training and professional development. Provide consultation to the Office of Student Experience to assist with development of diversity, equity, racial equity, inclusion and social justice on-line training modules. Serve on CLA-UGE and other campus committees Other duties as assigned 5% Programming Develop and present at Summer Orientation sessions designed for MLK students and parents. Work closely with MLK executive assistant and the PES project specialist in planning, scheduling of programs, events, and in-house professional development and creating evaluations. Develop and conduct unit programs such as orientation, first-year experience courses, recruitment, commencement, workshops, parent programming, and student employment. Develop and conduct programs related to civil rights education, social justice education, and programs related to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy. Qualifications Required Qualifications BA/BS plus 6 years of relevant experience or Masters degree plus 4 years of relevant experience Experience in providing culturally attentive, diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice academic advising Supervision of students, peer mentors and professional staff Classroom teaching experience Experience in leading, developing and delivering diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice training/professional development programs for students and staff Experience in curricular and co-curricular student programming Preferred Qualifications Master's Ed.D or Ph.D degree in a liberal arts discipline, higher education, student affairs, college student personnel, social work, ethnic studies, sociology, cultural studies and/or social justice and human rights Knowledgeable of student development theories related to academic advising and student support services Familiarity with liberal arts programs and university-wide student support services. Additional relevant higher education advising experience or experience working with college students in other capacities. Budget management experience or demonstrated knowledge of budgeting models and/or budgeting practice.
