Job Summary
The Associate Provost for Analytics and Assessment plays a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of the University through data-driven decision-making. They manage offices that provide analytics to support decision making at all levels of the University. This position leads the acquisition and transformation of institutional data into strategic, accessible, widely available and actionable information. They are responsible for directing data analysis and interpretation used to set strategic goals, develop metrics, measure progress, and more broadly understand the University's position in the higher education environment.
Essential Functions
Champions an equity-minded culture of evidence as well as ethical data-informed decision-making at every level of the University. Manages the Office of University Analytics and Institutional Research and the Office of Academic Planning and Assessment to provide appropriate data and access, analysis, and context for unbiased and ethical data use and interpretation.
Oversees the management and organization of data and analytics governance and literacy at the University, and acts as liaison for data and analytics governance and literacy initiatives within the UMass System. Builds and fosters data use, management, and governance systems at the University that promote understanding and collaboration among the Amherst campus business units and allow for collaboration across the UMass System.
Informs and guides the University's long-term goals and strategic objectives through strategic analysis. Leverages data and analysis to allow the campus to set strategic goals, develop metrics, and measure progress. Contributes to the understanding of the University's position in the higher education environment, e.g, by benchmarking. Participates in and supports the University's strategic planning, including annual strategic planning and budgeting updates. Develops data reports and visualizations (including dashboards) to support and empower decision makers.
Builds effective partnerships throughout the University by ethically and freely sharing appropriate data and information and providing guidance. Ensures effective service for internal and external partners in response to requests for service and information.
Leads and oversees the collection, acquisition, and transformation of data for use by academic leadership in decision-making. Oversees traditional reporting responsibilities for the University. Develops and executes strategic roadmaps to leverage and extend IT tools and approaches to enable business units to access data or perform their own analyses. Provides support and context for the ethical, unbiased, and appropriate use and analysis of data as well as interpretation of results.
Coordinates and collaborates with administration, staff, and faculty to promote equitable educational effectiveness and student success as well as programmatic innovations and improvements. Identifies, prioritizes, and supports institutional survey and evaluation planning, design, analysis, and interpretation.
Works with senior management, faculty leadership and others to identify and act upon learner-centered assessment and curricular improvement priorities. Develops and manages culturally responsive and equity-minded assessment information systems, strategies, and initiatives to support decision-making by senior administrators as well as faculty, staff, and students.
Conducts and/or oversees in-depth descriptive, diagnostic, prescriptive, and/or predictive analyses, as appropriate, pertaining to all areas of educational effectiveness including, for example, equitable student retention and completion, space use, policy, and initiative impacts.
Serves as the NECHE Accreditation Liaison Officer, including tracking departmental accreditation processes.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Doctoral (or other terminal) degree in higher education, social sciences, measurement and evaluation, business, or another field requiring experience with and knowledge of direct and indirect assessment and evaluation methods.
At least five (5) years or professional experience conducting outcomes assessment and/or applied social science research (quantitative, qualitative, mixed- and/or multi-method) preferably in a higher education setting and including three (3) years of team supervision.
Ability to work independently, define and answer research problems, interact and collaborate across academic units.
Demonstrated excellence in project planning, problem-solving, collaboration, service delivery, and building relationships with diverse colleagues.
Experience with predictive analytics and data visualization software.
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Experience in meeting the needs of academic leadership in data analysis and interpretation.
Experience in contributing to strategic planning, enrollment management, and/or resource allocation.
