The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) at theUniversity of Illinois seeks to fill a position for an Assistant orAssociate Professor of Food/ Nutrition Insecurity. This position is partof an initiative at the College of Agricultural, Consumer andEnvironmental Sciences to contribute to the improvement of global humanand environmental health via the food system. We intend to dramaticallystrengthen and expand our capacity in this arena through aseven-position cluster hire focused on Food and Agricultural Systems forGlobal Health. Faculty hired into these positions will lead college-wideefforts in food security and global health and participate in relatedcampus priorities, including the Nutrition and Food Security theme ofthe campus strategic plan (https://blogs.illinois.edu/view/7831/601847),the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute, Illinois Extension,Carle-Illinois College of Medicine, Center for Social & BehavioralSciences, and Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, among others.
The FSHN Department seeks an outstanding scholar who uses communitynutrition, food & nutrition policy, public health and/or relatedapproaches to alleviate consequences of food and nutrition insecurity onhealth and quality of life. We seek a scholar whose work impactsadvancing social equity at the regional, national, and/or internationallevel.
The selected candidate is expected to develop an integratedresearch-teaching program that addresses food and nutrition insecurity.Potential research topics may include, but are not limited to,developing community or population health interventions to address foodand nutrition insecurity, addressing social determinants of health andother barriers to health equity, and prevention or treatment ofnoncommunicable diseases that are prevalent in food insecurepopulations. Researchers targeting populations at risk for nutritioninsecurity, such as early childhood, elderly/healthy aging, and ruralpopulations are also encouraged to apply. Research to advance themeasurement of nutrition security or malnutrition (self- reported,biomarkers, clinical assessment, or via technological innovation) arealso of interest.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will establish and maintain an externallyfunded and independent research program focused on food and nutritioninsecurity. Key discoveries will be translated into national and globalhealth practices and food and nutrition policy changes. The successfulcandidate will teach food science and human nutrition courses relevantto their expertise at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Thisposition will involve research, teaching, and extension.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have an earned doctorate in applied nutrition or closelyrelated disciplines including but not limited to public health,epidemiology, community health, community development, food science, andbiochemistry. Evidence of professional promise and excellentinterpersonal and communication skills are required. Expertise in foodand nutrition security as it relates to nutrition and health outcomes isrequired. The ability to collaborate with diverse audiences andcontribute to advancing the diversity, equity, and inclusivity of thedepartment and the University is required. A strong record ofpublication and extramural funding will be required for candidatesapplying for the Associate Professor level.
Preferred Qualifications:
Postdoctoral training or equivalent professional experience;cross-training in relevant areas; ability to secure extramural funding;a strong publication record; ability to mentor students; experience incollege-level teaching; and engagement in professional associations.Individuals holding an MPH and/or RDN are encouraged to apply.

100% full-time 9-month (academic year) tenure-track faculty position atthe Assistant or Associate Professor level with a 20% commitment toExtension.
