  Position Summary

  Columbia University Irving Medical Center seeks an exceptional individual with executive-level capital management experience, excellent interpersonal capabilities, and an empowering leadership style to join the organization as the new Assistant Vice President, Capital Project Management and Planning.

  The search is being conducted due to the continuous advancement of the institution and the desire to ensure the physical environment continues to champion the clinical, research, and educational prowess of the organization.

  As a member of the department's senior management team, the Assistant Vice President supports the mission, vision, and overall advancement of the institution and is responsible for overseeing the planning and execution of all capital projects related to clinical care, research, educational, and administrative portfolios. Working closely with the AVP for Engineering, the incumbent will assist in the planning and implementation of campus infrastructure improvements; will ensure capital project renovations are aligned with NYC Local Law 97 mandates as well as the department's infrastructure renewal plans guided by existing life cycle analysis.

  Reporting to and under the general supervision of the Vice President of Facilities Management, Operations and Planning, the incumbent is responsible for directing all aspects of capital planning, budgeting, design, and construction for new buildings, renovations, and campus renewal.

  The Assistant Vice President will build and maintain effective relationships with all campus constituents and work cooperatively and collaboratively with other campus offices and departments, key administration, faculty, and staff to ensure the effective use of resources. The Assistant Vice President also represents the organization as a primary liaison for all matters related to planning and construction, including external constituents, local building departments, the community, and other outside agencies interfacing with CUIMC.

  Responsibilities

  Lead the development, oversight, and execution of multi-year campus capital construction plans, including academic, research, housing and support services and clinical spaces.Oversee campus design and construction activities, including building renovation projects and major construction projects.Provide critical leadership and strategic direction for the capital project management team in all phases of capital project development and implementation.Responsible for leading and driving the progress, preparation and review of design documentation in conjunction with internal design management staff. Work closely with internal stakeholders to set the vision and strategy for program and project development.Responsible for overall staff management of the capital project management team, including building and improving staff performance through recruiting, skill development, and evaluation as well as managing staff resource allocation and deployment.Work with organization leadership and project clients to develop a clear understanding of the risk tolerance for projects and then clearly track, navigate, and report on risks throughout a project life cycle.Lead the campus planning process and stewardship of the campus.Provide expertise and counsel to senior leadership and clients to deliver cost-effective projects consistent with the master plan and program objectivesLead the space planning group and oversee the campus space database (Centerstone) to accurately capture space usage and utilization for reporting, planning, and billing purposes.Provide leadership to the space planning group in order to implement and maintain a "virtual plan room" so all pertinent drawings can be accessed in a secure and reliable manner by all who need accessEmbrace and utilize technology and data analysis to guide actions.Prepare and deliver reports, presentations, and other updates to leadership and other internal constituencies as needed.Set long-term strategic planning for growing residential and research portfolios.Plan and implement adaptive reuse of existing antiquated buildings.Infrastructure sustainability - work with internal partners to streamline infrastructure long-range planning.Lead team in budget and cost management/planning.Front-end project budgeting.Various other projects and duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications

  Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus ten years of related experience.

  Preferred Qualifications

  15 years of experience with increasing responsibility and an excellent track record in all phases of capital management including space planning, design, and construction. Strong working knowledge of project management tools and capital budget administration.A strong leadership profile: articulate, diplomatic, excellent communications and interpersonal skills, commitment to interdisciplinary and collaborative teamwork.Honesty, integrity, compassion, action orientation, and perseverance.Professional licensure RA (Registered Architect) or PE (Professional Engineer). Master's/Graduate degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management.
