Description
The Assistant Controller will take ownership of all sales tax-related matters, including audits, compliance, and reporting. Additionally, this role extends to property tax assessments, tax estimates, monthly bank reconciliations, floor plan reconciliations, collateral borrowing base schedules, and general ledger account reconciliations. The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of tax laws, exceptional analytical skills, organizational prowess, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Duties:
Sales Tax Reporting:
Prepare and review sales tax reports, reconciliations, and related financial documentation.
Generate and maintain records of sales tax transactions, exemptions, and credits.
Sales Tax Compliance:
Maintain a comprehensive understanding of sales tax filing requirements in relevant states.
Assist in various tax assessments and filings, including Income Tax, Franchise Tax, Annual Property Tax Assessments, etc.
Develop a systematic process for tracking and meeting filing deadlines.
Prepare, review, and submit sales tax returns in compliance with state-specific regulations.
Monitor changes in sales tax laws to ensure ongoing compliance.
Analyze and interpret complex sales tax laws for organizational applicability.
Audits and Disputes:
Prepare for and manage sales tax audits, including responding to auditor requests and negotiating settlements.
Represent the company during sales tax audits and disputes with tax authorities.
Tax Strategy Development:
Develop and implement tax strategies to optimize sales tax liability and minimize risk.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and address potential tax issues.
Advise the company on sales tax implications related to business activities and expansions.
Financial Compliance:
Handle property tax assessments and compliance.
Provide expertise in tax estimates and monthly bank reconciliations.
Manage floor plan reconciliations and collateral borrowing base schedules for monthly submissions to banks.
Conduct general ledger account reconciliations for audits.
Lead the preparation and submission of audit workpapers.
Potentially engage in starting up a basic form of internal audit functions.
Customer Support:
Provide guidance to internal teams and external customers on sales tax matters.
Conduct regular Sales Tax training for all branches.
Address and resolve sales tax inquiries and disputes promptly and professionally.
Process Improvement:
Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency in sales tax and financial compliance.
Develop and document sales tax and financial procedures and best practices.
Compliance Software:
Utilize sales tax and financial compliance software and tools for accurate reporting.
Stay current with emerging technology and automation solutions for sales tax and financial management.
Requirements
Qualifications:
Minimum 2 years of accounting experience.
Preferably experienced in filing sales tax returns and handling sales tax audits.
Strong knowledge of state and local sales tax laws and regulations.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management abilities.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
Proficient in using tax software, Microsoft Excel, and financial reconciliation tools.
Ability to adapt to changes in tax laws and regulations.
High level of integrity and commitment to maintaining the highest ethical standards.
Proactive approach to addressing and resolving tax-related and financial issues.
Bachelor's degree in Accounting is required. CPA certification is a plus.
