Summary:
Are you passionate about animal welfare, veterinary medicine, and changing the world for animals and communities? The ASPCA Julie Morris Shelter Medicine Residency is a unique three-year clinical training opportunity based in New York City (NYC) with training opportunities across the country. Residents receive training in all aspects of shelter medicine in keeping with American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) requirements, including clinical medicine and surgery, high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN), cruelty investigations and forensics, disaster response, shelter operations, population management, and more.
What you will do:
The residency program is a core program of the Shelter Medicine Services (SMS) team. SMS works to improve the health and welfare of animals in shelters and communities by strengthening shelter medicine programs and strategically applying expertise to improve animal health and well-being. Under the umbrella of SMS, the Resident(s) works closely with numerous internal ASPCA departments and benefits from working side-by-side with expert staff, including veterinary internists and surgeons, forensics veterinarians, behaviorists, and board-certified shelter medicine specialists. A dedicated Director of Shelter Medicine Clinical Training, also NYC-based, provides direct supervision and support to Residents in their clinical work. Residents also work with and learn from a wide range of sheltering and veterinary organizations that partner with the ASPCA.
The work of the Resident is varied, rigorous, and always interesting. Residents move through rotations and experiences from providing direct care to neonatal kittens to deploying for large scale cruelty cases, consulting with shelters and clinics, and collaborating with shelter behavior teams. Given the breadth of work performed by the ASPCA's many programs, there is never a dull moment.

Shelter Practice
Provide high-quality, practical, efficient, compassionate, and cost-effective veterinary and behavioral care in accordance with shelter medicine principles and best practices while balancing individual animal and population level considerationsProvide a safe and compassionate environment for animals in our care, our staff, and for our clients by using low-stress handling techniques.Provide skilled and efficient diagnosis and treatment of patientsAchieve competency in recognizing, diagnosing, and managing infectious disease outbreaks; thoughtfully mitigate disease spread and manage outbreaksMaintain regular and close communication with colleagues regarding medical and behavioral needs and animal flow between the populationsEnsure that animals receive timely medical exams and are provided with on-going care as appropriate; ensure care provided is aligned with, and contributes to, the efficient and humane flow of animals from intake through outcomeMaintain diligent clear medical records, when needed in consideration of the evidentiary chain and legal requirementsGuide appropriate and timely decisions about euthanasia - with attention to animals' physical, medical, social, and behavioral needs collectivelyDesign and implement protocols for specific shelters, including written documentation, staff training, monitoring, evaluation, and revision in collaboration with SMS mentoring and leadership involvement appropriate to the team, department, or partner shelterDevelop skill in performing HQHVSN techniques and awareness of differing management styles for operating HQHVSN clinicsDevelop a thorough understanding of the spectrum and range of cruelty cases, the types of assets and logistics required for investigating and responding to large scale cases, and knowledge of the agencies engaged in the reporting, investigation, intervention, prosecution, and enforcement as well as applicable statutes and lawsPerform live animal exams, forensic exams, and participate in evidence collection. Gain exposure to and, where applicable, supervised practice in preparing written reports, maintaining chain of evidence, providing expert witness testimony and communicating with legal authoritiesGain an understanding of and experience in disaster response involving companion animals, including response, reporting and coordination; methods of safe transport measures to control disease and other risks in temporary sheltering; and animal reunification practices.Contribute to a culture of learning; teach and mentor junior residents, interns, externs, staff and volunteers on shelter medicine principles and shelter medicine protocols
Consulations
Visit and consult with a wide range of shelters and animal welfare organizations representative of the range of sizes, budgets, species, philosophies, facility styles, and programs that exist within the field; assist in shelter medicine consultations and evaluations with shelters, universities, community organizations and other groupsConsult with shelters, veterinarians, communities, and other professionals on medical issues pertaining to shelters on all major consultation areas as defined in the ABVP residency handbook through email, video, telephone, and in-person meansGain mastery in systematically gathering data, performing observations, communicating findings, and providing resources for use by animal welfare organizations to improve animal health and welfareAdvise on standards, quality of care, protocols, and adherence to regulatory requirements as they pertain to shelter medical programs and related initiativesContribute to facility design and programmatic development in support of new and existing ASPCA programs from a shelter medicine perspectiveAdvise and educate the public, shelters, veterinarians and ASPCA departments on issues pertaining to shelter medicine, animal health, and animal welfare
Research and Training (10%)
Engage in collaborative research to provide expertise and support for implementation and evaluation of shelter medical programs and protocols, including publication of resultsPublish at least 1 first author paper on a shelter medicine topic in a peer-reviewed journal in accordance with ABVP guidelines and at least 1 first author article related to shelter medicine for a lay audience; submit ABVP required case report prior to completion of residency programResearch and develop presentations, audio-visual content, website content, and written materials on shelter medicineDevelop and coordinate new and continuing education for professional veterinary and lay shelter staff; deliver formal presentations to shelter staff and professional audiences as per ABVP requirements
Professional Development (20%)
Engage in shelter medicine specialty level continuing education to enhance shelter medicine knowledge and expertiseParticipate in ASPCA Learning and Development opportunities to cultivate clear, empathetic communication skills including developing a comfort with giving and receiving feedbackParticipate in and periodically lead clinical rounds and journal clubsMaintain and submit all necessary documentation to ABVP regarding clinical training or other residency requirements, including but not limited to case logs and case reports

Education, Experience, and Licensure:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary college.Minimum of one year of veterinary experience, rotating internship preferredDemonstrated interest in shelter medicine required; prior experience in shelter medicine practice strongly preferredEligibility for veterinary licensure in New York State prior to residency start dateFear Free Shelter and Veterinary certified is required within 60 days of hireCandidates who move forward in our process will be asked to provide a letter of interest (if not already provided), along with veterinary college transcripts and NAVLE results.

Compensation and Benefits:
he target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and staff compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The expected hiring salary range for this role is set forth below and may be modified in the future.
The starting salary for this role is $90,000, with the opportunity for an annual salary increase.
