  Job Summary

  The Garrett Family Cartographic Archivist is the subject specialist, primary contact, and public face of the Cartographic Collection at UTA Libraries’ Special Collections & Archives. This role is critical to continuing the success of public outreach, dynamic collecting, and innovative access to the cartographic collection. Public outreach efforts include serving on the planning committee for the Virginia Garrett Cartographic History Lecture Series, curating exhibitions, publishing new subject-related scholarship, and engaging with the campus, local, and global communities Special Collections serves. The collecting efforts of this position include working closely with donors as well as rare book and map sellers while also accessioning, describing, preserving, and housing acquisitions. Finally, this position contributes to and supports Special Collection’s efforts to provide innovative, forward-thinking, and open access to cartographic materials. The Garrett Family Cartographic Archivist is a key member of the Special Collections team and reports to the Director of Special Collections & Archives.

  Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  Outreach and ReferenceThe Garrett Family Cartographic Archivist is the subject specialist for world-wide cartographic history, international printmaking, and pre-20th century Texas history. The position is the public face of the SPCO Cartographic Collection and is expected to be highly involved as the SPCO representative in professional organizations and regional history groups as well as present and publish new scholarship using SPCO collections.

  Additional outreach activities also include curating exhibitions, leading continuing and new digital projects, serving on the planning committee for the Virginia Garrett Cartographic History Lecture Series, partnering with UTA faculty, and collaborating with the SPCO outreach unit to create innovative and experiential programming.

  The reference duties of the Garrett Family Cartographic Archivist center around the subject specialist areas but also includes the entire holdings of Special Collections. The Garret Family Cartographic Archivist participates in SPCO’s reference desk model with assigned on-call hours and is part of the Saturday hours rotation.

  Acquisitions and Access The Garrett Family Cartographic Archivist is the primary contact and facilitator of all cartographic-related acquisitions as well other subject specialist areas. The position follows UTA policies and procedures when accepting or purchasing new materials for Special Collections and follows SPCO’s workflows for recording acquisition information.

  The position oversees all areas of access to the cartographic collection including item-level registration, creating descriptive metadata and archival description when needed, digitization efforts in collaboration with Digitization Services, providing preservation housing and organized permanent storage to cartographic materials, and performing regular inventories of selected areas of the collection.

  SPCO Team and Libraries Responsibilities The Garrett Family Cartographic Archivist regularly contributes to SPCO team projects, works well with the team, and provides support in all areas of SPCO’s work when needed. As part of the outreach team, the Garrett Family Cartographic Archivist will often be involved in planning outreach programming outside of the subject specializations for the position.

  The position will serve on cross functional Libraries and campus committees as a representative of SPCO . This position also serves as a subject liaison to an assigned academic department.

  Performs other duties assignedThe Libraries’ has various locations across campus. This is a non-tenure track position.

  Required Qualifications

  Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA -accredited program OR a master’s degree in a closely related field such as history, geography, or art history.

  Experience working in a cartographic, print, or rare book collection.

  Familiarity of current archival professional standards and trends in archival administration.

  Demonstrated ability to lead outreach programming and involvement in professional organizations.

  Preferred Qualifications

  Formal training in cartographic history and geography.

  Knowledge of archival, cartographic, and geographic research methodology.

  Experience providing reference support in a customer service environment.

  Knowledge of the history and geography of Texas, the Gulf Coast region, and the American Southwest.

  Training or knowledge in current archival standards and practices including arrangement, description, and preservation.

  Experience with Geographic Information Systems.

  Reading knowledge of at least 2 non-English languages, preferably Spanish, Latin, German, or French.

  Demonstrated organizational, analytical, decision-making, problem-solving and planning skills.

  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and work effectively in a team environment.
